There are several Doom ports listed in the experimental section. I'm curious what the differences are between the various Doom ports available in RetroPie.

@Solid-One said in Doom and Doom 2 40fps?:

          I followed steps from here:

          https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Doom#how-to-launch-doom-iwads-and-mods-pwads-from-emulationstation-using-zdoom

Just ignore the "Darkest Hour mod" part. You can use these steps to create the .sh file. I have a couple of them on my RPI, running both original games and games w/ mods.

And yes, zdoom accepts keyboard, mouse, joystick and probably even touchscreen. It works just like desktop versions.

The only con I have is: I can't navigate through menus using only a joystick. I need a mouse and/or a keyboard for that task. I can't exit zdoom directly from joystick either. The workaround is having a keyboard and/or mouse nearby, everytime you wish to play zdoom.

I know in Windows I can fully navigate all the menus with a controller out of the box on ZDoom.

Is there an equivalent to zdoom-USERNAME.ini in the Linux/Pi port with bindings?

RetroPie only officially has two Doom ports: libretro-prboom and (the optional section) ZDoom.
(I believe when ZDoom was first added to RetroPie, it was in the experimental section but now it's in the optional section)

There's other Doom source ports that will compile on the Raspberry Pi (Like Crispy Doom & Chocolate Doom):
            https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/5614/any-list-for-compatible-custom-wads-in-prboom/24

Is there an equivalent to zdoom-USERNAME.ini in the Linux/Pi port with bindings?

            The equivalent ZDoom configuration file:
            /opt/retropie/configs/ports/doom/zdoom.ini

I just look and realized that libretro-prboom is also in the optional section :)

My controller worked out of the box as well in RetroPie

So @enderandrew when are you planning on getting a Raspberry Pi? :)

Absolutely. I try not to spend money on myself at Christmas-time and the past two years there has been a new Raspberry Pi released in February so I'm waiting until then to build my RetroPie.

And if i recall correctly, the original DOOM was designed to run at 35 FPS so getting 40 is about perfect.

On the computer, GZDOOM runs better than ZDOOM. It is a fork of ZDOOM that uses OpenGL hardware acceleration on the GPU as opposed to classic DOOM-style software rendering. I don't know how good OpenGL rendering is on the Pi, so I don't know if there would be benefit to using GZDOOM instead of ZDOOM or not.

@retronerd when you are playing doom, on the main screen where it says things like new game and quit, go into options then general. It is in there.

@enderandrew what zdoom version are you using? some bleeding-edge version compiled from source?

If yes, I suspect they implemented controller navigation support recently.

Can you please confirm if, running Strife, you can talk to NPCs with a controller? I got the same problem here with menus on Strife: I can't say yes or no to any NPCs with a controller; only with a Enter keypress on a keyboard, or click in the names with a mouse.

@Solid-One I am running a recent dev build. I think both ZDOOM and GZDOOM got an official release early this year as well. I'll go test NPCs in Strife today.
