Win32 Disk Imager Issue... can't get .img on SD card

The Win32 Disk Imager program does not recognize the .img file whether it's on search for . or .img. It says that the file does not exist if I copy and paste the .img.

@fefemae The you must not have extracted the image to a suitable location first. Why are you copy and pasting?
Step 1: Download, e.g. filename is retropie-v3.8-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz
Step 2: Extract to acquire retropie-v3.8-rpi2_rpi3.img
Step 3: Press the blue folder icon in Disk Imager and browse to the file acquired in Step 2.
Step 4: Choose device and click write.No copy and paste needed.

@rbaker that's what i did. The copy and paste was an alternative solution when the file didn't appear in the browse for the file.

@fefemae If you have downloaded the file as described and unzipped it as shown to a known location, you can verify that it is there in windows before you even start Disk Imager. If Disk Imager doesn't see it when you point to that location, then it is not a disk image or it is a corrupted file.

@rbaker I guess it has to be a corrupted file then. I have downloaded and gone through this process twice and it does the same thing. How do I fix the corrupted file? Re-download and go through the process again?

@rbaker When I look in file explorer, the image is there. I followed the steps exactly to download/extract, and the file is a .img. When I go on Win32 Disk Imager, I look for the file and it isn't there.

@fefemae there is no need to even extract the .img.gz file. You can directly choose it (show all files *) and burn it.

@fefemae Here is what I just did....
I downloaded the retropie 4.1 image from the website for a raspberry Pi 3. I downloaded it to F: on my PC. I then extracted it by right clicking and selecting extract here. The image is now there. I start Disk Imager. I press the blue folder and browse to F: It is there so I select it and it is now ready to write. A corrupt .img would still show up. I don't know what to tell you now. You are missing something. -

@fefemae Please explain what you did to solve it and what you were doing wrong so that others may benefit in the future. Glad it's working now - so you just burned the unextracted file?

@rbaker I just put the unextracted file on the SD card. For some reason, that one showed up. I'm about to see if the RetroPIe boots up on my TV to see if it really worked--- will let you know.

@rbaker I plugged the raspberry pi into an outlet with the charger cord, and attached it to the tv with an HDMI. I'm just getting a No Signal message on the tv now.

What do you mean by this? You have to write a disk image. You cannot drag and drop the file onto an sd card. You mention a charger? What power supply are you using?

@rbaker I wrote the file onto it, sorry for bad wording. My raspberry pi came with a charger thing that I plugged into the wall for a power source. Also, I saw that I could only get the extracted file written onto the SD card when it was in the local disk... so that's what I did and it is working on the TV now

What do you mean by this? If you burn this using disk imager, it will not boot. Are you saying you can?

@rbaker i mean that you can directly choose the .img.gz file with the software and burn it to the sd card and it will work, without the need of previously extracting it to only a .img file.

@paradadf Wow, I did not know this and I have not tried this. How does it burn a compressed image? Why extract at all?
