Rename a nonworking rom
-
On my RP3 In Emulationstation I have a ROM named Cyberbots. there are 3 of these. the only one that works is cyberbotsu.
On the attract mode side of my pie Cyberbots does not work. When i drill down to the location in cps2 it lives in here,
and is connected to Snap, wheel art and marquee art work.
I have copied the working rom to the cps2 folder. I know how to delete the non working rom. BUT how would i go about renaming the copied to the old name (from cyberbotsu to cyberbots) this way i wont have to find all the other art work and rename it to the new one or re scrape. hope this makes since.Cliff notes: need to know how to rename a non working rom to a working rom (just need to drop a letter thats all) after its been copied to correct directory.
Thanks -
You didn't read https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first , so you didn't read retropie's wiki, so you don't know how to manage arcade roms... Having 3-4 people having the same issue every week (which is "i downloaded my arcade rom from a random site and it doesn't work", i don't care if you spelled it another way) is seriously annoying.

@barbudreadmon lol...
steve jobs realised that people didnt want to build they computers, they just wanted them to be easy, just to plug the power cable and maybe a keyboard and a mouse and thats all, not even programming needed. Why? because most of the people dont like/dont want/dont have the instinct to program, make research and do all the stuff needed.
He just needs help, and instead of researching on other pages he is posting it here, just try to help him or ignore him, thats all

@ALG in all fairness @barbudreadmon has a valid point as he is who we have to thank for the FBA emulator on retropie.
And the question to his answer is on the wiki page he referenced in the first post. He doesn't have the correct romset. He needs to rebuild or get the correct romset. The question is asked almost every day and the answer is always you have the wrong romset. Get the correct one. If he has the correct romset he needs to understand the difference between parents and clones which is also described on the wiki page. If people would follow the rules and read and follow the instructions they would not have to ask.
If people aren't really into tinkering they really probably shouldn't be using retropie to be honest.
-
@ALG These questions have been asked, answered and well documented before though. The stickied post does say to read the wiki and search the forum first before raising a new topic. Though the reply is abrupt, it is still a valid response.
@Fordman9870 As suggested by @barbudreadmon please can you read the Wiki, search the forum and try any already documented steps to assist in the first instance. Of all the emulated systems within Retropie, arcade can be the hardest and most confusing to decipher how to get games working due to how romsets are built and supported with each emulator. That's why the wiki has detailed guides and the forum has lots of mame questions already.

@markyh444 I appreciate what you are saying but some people try to make MAME sound like voodoo or sorcery. There are simple ways to get MAME running, perhaps posting a "MAME for Dummies" guide might help... For example I used a 0.78 set, non merged so the ROMs are pretty much standalone. Stick these in your Arcade folder, select lr-mame 2003 as the emulator... stick the neogeo.zip in there if you want to play those too.. and that's it. 90% of the arcade ROMs I want play with very few issues, most play flawlessly.
-
@columboscoat I understand what you're saying, and I have a few arcade games up and running easily too, but I was mainly making the point that unlike the likes of NES Game boy etc. it's much less plug and play.
And I was redirecting @barbudreadmon to the documentation which is already pretty in depth on arcade setup and romsets.
-
@markyh444 It wasn't a criticism, more of an observation. Just pointing out there are easier ways to do it without downloading 40GB of data of which 30GB is bootlegs, Mahjong and shitty "mature" content...
-
@columboscoat Yeh, I've filtered all that shit out and I've just got Turtles and The Simpson's on my build.
-
@markyh444 I stuck about 60 or so on. Stuff I played like Toki, Wonderboy, Cabal, BubbleBobble.... yeah, showing my age now! Also enjoying the older "classics" and stuff released after I discovered girls and stopped hanging around snooker / pool halls and sticky-floored arcades.

@Fordman9870 How about, https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2859/how-to-use-mame-with-retropie-help-guide. You cannot rename rom files, you just need to read this page and you'll see why.
need to know how to rename a non working rom to a working rom
This would be great if it were possible. If a rom doesn't work with the emulator of your choice, it's the wrong rom. Nothing more to do. Get the right one. Renaming it will do nothing at all since it is the contents of the said rom that are used to run it and if they are wrong you'll get nothing at all except a black screen as the emulator thinks "ahhh pacman, a classic, mmm lr-mame2003 with scanlines, nice choice, here we go then, errrrrr no."

@rbaker That's a solid guide for people who want an "easy" way to use MAME ROMs. Does the forum have a "resources" section? I know that's what the wiki is for but... as you know it is seldom read!

Or watch? ** video tuts ** The video tutorial is very easy to follow, you literally have to do what the author in the video does. It cannot get easier.
@Fordman9870 All you need is to follow and read this page on the Wiki:
https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs
It has everything you need to get MAME working. You have the wrong romset.

That's a valid point, if such a post is made, i hope there is a "sticky" feature on the forum.
Edit : i know there is a wiki for that, but having frequently asked questions on forum would be nice too, since this is where people come asking.

@barbudreadmon It's maybe just frustration but MAME is NOT rocket science. Some people would like others to believe it is... just use the right set for the right emulator? Again, MAME don't make it easy the way they number sets... It seems to me like they deliberately make it obscure and difficult to understand just to exclude people...
-
@barbudreadmon I read plenty of what the "core" MAME community think of the Pi and RetroPie... they are definitely NOT fans of either... in fact they treat it like a joke.
-
@barbudreadmon Yeah, but people are lazy idiots! Are you new on this planet? You have a lot to learn...

Thats kinda offending, since I'm lazy I won't write a full reply. Consider yourself lucky this time...

@PetroRie I resent yo...Ah sure, whatever... I'm not here to make enemies, mate.

lol that was actually a joke. Like you call out on lazy people and I reply with "you're lucky that I'm lazy" as in if I wasn't lazy I would kick your butt.
I agree with you, some people do ask very stupid questions on this board. And I'm not talking about the uber technical related stuff but the most basic stuff which has been posted over and over here in the forum and on the Wiki page. I noticed it a lot lately, maybe the popularity of RetroPie is increasing???
Finding out about the MAME romset takes like a couple minutes on Google. If you search for "retropie mame" the second result will explain everything. The clrmamepro video tutorial is as easy as it can get.
