    @grzdanielak /boot/config.txt (RetroPie images are Raspbian)

      I just bought these myself and dropped them in config.txt (literally copied and pasted from the email), and they're still returning disabled. And I've confirmed that I gave them the right S/N.

      Any special tricks to this, or should I harass them to make sure the keys were genned right?

            Precisely what I did. I was primarily wondering if there was something specific to the RetroPie image that might cause this to be a problem.

              @clemon79 No. The codec licences are added to /boot/config.txt. That is the boot partition which Raspbian, the OS RetroPie runs on uses to boot itself. RetroPie has nothing to do with this. MOSTLY. But it does nothing that would affect the codecs. You've seen the file. There's nothing in there really specific to RetroPie.

                I agree, but I figured it was worth asking just in case, because I can't think of single reason this shouldn't be working. The same process was a two-second slam-dunk on my Pi 2, but that was a while back. (Yes, these are newly-bought keys for the Pi 3.)

                  @clemon79 which RetroPie image are you using? Not berryboot for example? Post your config perhaps? (Put it in a code block - see link in my signature)

                    There is nothing specific in RetroPie for the codec keys to work, it is the same as Raspbian. The keys are tied to one's RPi so you can't buy one's and put them in another one.
                    Do as BuZz said and post your config.txt and also your Kodi log, it will tell if they are active or not.

                      Turns out in Linux, case matters. (I knew this of course. :))

                      pi@RetroPie-3:~ $ vcgencmd codec_enabled mpg2
                      mpg2=disabled
                      pi@RetroPie-3:~ $ vcgencmd codec_enabled MPG2
                      MPG2=enabled

                      So, yeah. Just another reminder for me to check that stuff first. :)
