    the point of the tate option was to eliminate the need for config files, but as long as you got it working i guess :)

    (I am using fba2012)

    tate mode is for mame2003...

      @dankcushions correct - that's why I was so hard pressed to get it to work.

      However, using mame2003 with all of the Tate instructions followed, it never worked. I'll revisit after my Brain has time to recover.

      Thanks again

        It's a HP 23" monitor but I'm not sure which since I got it "debranded" from woot.com a while back. It's an older model that weighs a good 5lbs even tho it's still slim. The reason I like it so much is it has good built-in speakers so I can plug in the Pi via HDMI and get sound from the monitor itself. it's a 1080p60 display with a gloss plastic screen. Wish i could tell you more but all the stickers were removed so i don't know the exact model. I only know it's HP since that's molded into the back plastic and I peeled off the cover sticker that was supposed to prevent me from figuring it out. It's about 3yrs old if that helps.

              @esmith13 yeah i had the same 23" branded as an hp. The viewing angle and picture was the best ive ever seen in a monitor. I wish i had kept it. I gave it to my ex. The reason i asked is because ive never seen an unbranded model. When i used to build multi cabs i would always look for the best viewing angle monitors i could because cheap lcd's were terrible for vertical games because one person would get a nice screen and the other player would get a really dark screen because of the viewing angle. So i would always be looking for good deals on good quality monitors. If anyone wants a monitor that looks good for mame, i would recommend this monitor.

                  @KillerQ It must be awkward typing on that keyboard.

                    @columboscoat lol. That's just a backup. For anything major I use my trusty K400.

                    That little one is great for basic stuff, however.

                      @KillerQ nice setup. If you decide you dont want the kink in the cable, you can buy an angled hdmi cable. I too have one of those keyboards. Im thinking about rewiring the top 4 buttons on the right so i can use it as a controller if i want. Unless i can find a way to get retroarch to recognize them.

                        Thanks, I appreciate it. I almost bought one of those angles cables, but this 1.5 foot one that I have works great and it's light - so there's no strain.

                        That small keyboard is great for basic, quick input, but the mouse dpi sucks. The Logitech K400 is my main keyboard with this unit.

                            @KillerQ Nice work! Now you just need to attach a stepper motor to it and make it automatically rotate the screen for games that are configured to be vertical...

                                  @KillerQ I'm also trying to rotate the screen via retroarch menu. Is there any way to save the rotation change per game?

                                    I use rom-specific .cfg files for each game, but there's a quicker way as well.

                                    When you come across a game that you want portrait, at least for Retroarch-based MAME games, just go into the Retroarch settings while you're in the game, then go to video settings and change rotation and aspect ratio.

                                    Once that's done, go back to the quick menus and his SAVE GAME SETTINGS. Those particular settings will be saved for that game.

                                      Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I have a problem I can't seem to figure out. I have the 7" touchscreen and case that requires me to rotate the screen 180 degrees so it's not upside down. I edited boot/cmdline.cfg to do this. Everything works as it should except for vertical games. I have enabled tate mode and my arcade vertical games look like this:

                                      http://s112.photobucket.com/user/carnage9270/media/20170223_143404.jpg.html

                                      Any help would be greatly appreciated!

                                        @Carnage9270 I can tell you that I have always used a display rotated 180 using my boot/config.txt not cmdline.cfg.

                                        You will need to provide a lot more detail. You added this comment to an old thread, but we have no idea what image you are using, what version of the Pi you have, or even what emulator you are launching. You mentioned tate mode, so we could assume you are running lr-mame2003 but all we can know for sure is you are running 1943.

                                        You should read this, then share everything about your system and software.

                                        Then, tell us what does it look like without tate mode?

                                        Then, tell us what you want it to look like. Do you want it rotated sideways another 90 degrees?

                                        I would start exploring per-romsettings to find out what works on your system. I would disable the tate mode, see what it looks like, then create a config file next to your ROM called romname.zip.cfg and put this inside:

                                        allow_video_rotate = "true"
                                        video_rotation = "3"

                                        Then, try adjusting the rotation value 1-4 and see what you get.

                                        My 4-player cocktail style cabinet built as a custom "roadcase"

                                          actually if you're using tate mode in mame2003 you will want video_allow_rotate set to false, and you set it in the mame2003 config, not per-rom. more info: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/lr-mame2003#tate-mode

                                          but yes, we need more info :)
