@Capt_MorganCreek Could be a dodgy version of the ROM. Maybe try getting hold of a different one from somewhere else and try that one?

@markyh444 That's a good idea. I tried a new rom and had no issues yet in SP, will test out MP later and check if it happens again.

@Capt_MorganCreek glad that suggestion seems to have helped. With you using multiple emulators, but was getting the same result just left the ROM as the common factor.

I also have the same problems with the items. Two days ago I played with my girlfriend.
We have the same issue with multiplayer. Did you have success with changing the rom?
And if yes, which rom did you use?
I didn't have this problem before. But I don't know when it started.
I always updated the retropie-script and the emulators. I am also using two xbox360-controllers with the xpad-driver.

@Swampy I had no chance yet to play it with my girlfriend in MP, but it did not happen to me in SP. I'll let you know as soon as I tried it again.

@Capt_MorganCreek Thank you! Which version of the rom do you use?

                  @Swampy I use the European version 1.1.

I tried it again today using the new lr-mupen and it happened again in 2 -player racing mode.

I couldn't replicate it in singleplayer at all, so the problem seems to be multiplayer-exclusive. The way I tested it was finishing the race with player 2 and switching over to player 1. I had two controllers attached, so I just had to grab a different controller. After a few successful itemdrops it happened again and it seems to be completely random. I wasn't hit by anything and there wasn't anything else that would stand out.

Since it happened with different roms and all the emulators are based on mupen64plus I'm pretty sure it's a bug in the emulator :(

@Capt_MorganCreek I updated mupen64plus from source and updated the x-pad driver.
I also use the European version 1.1 (1.0 before).
Today my girlfriend played in single-player mode and it worked. No problems.
Then we tried to play together and it happened again! The issue began, with the third extra of my girlfriend.
She was not able to use it. For me all worked. At the next race the same problem.

No more ideas, what the problem could be.

                      Nobody else with this problem?

Capt_MorganCreek, do you also use a xbox360-controller with xpad?

@Swampy I use a Hiujia/Mayflash N64 to USB adapter and mapped it via xboxdrv. In my tests it happened with either player, but more often to player 2.

OK, that means it's not a problem with the controller.
                          I also think it's an mupen64plus problem.
Should we open an issue in https://github.com/mupen64plus/mupen64plus-user-issues/issues ?

But first we should exclude, that it is not another problem.

Sorry, I saw you've already done it:

                            Well described, thank you!!!

@Capt_MorganCreek at the weekend I was playing 3 player for the first time. I had already seen the issue with unusable items in two player races (it always seems to be one of the boost items for me) but in three player battles all the players drive off without their balloons. This means that even if you are hit, you cannot ever die. All players were immortal. If you drive back to your starting position the balloons are still there, just half sunk into the floor. I haven't tried a different ROM yet but i'm guessing the issue stems from the same thing as this?

@mortosaur That's actually a different error. It happens to me as well, but I guess it's just a graphical glitch since after 3 hits the round end. At least in my case. I encountered this glitch in different emulators.

I looked a little bit into the mupen64plus github.
Have you tested it with the US rom?

I have tested it with my girlfriend and the item error seems to disappear.
I used the US rom (Mario Kart 64 (U) [!].z64).

European ROMs are very weird with emulators. It's best you use the American version.
