I'm about 8 hours into trying to fix this on my own, I rarely ever post anywhere for help, but it's the weekend and the kids are dying to play some old NES games with me.

Bluetooth died after I did a apt-get update and upgrade. I was hoping it would fix another issue which I forgot about now.

I uninstalled bluetooth, reinstalled it, I then ran chmod +x /usr/sbin/bluetoothd because bluetooth refused to start, after that I got it started but it now refuses to start on boot.

      Bluetooth status gives:
      ā— bluetooth.service - Bluetooth service
      Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sat 2016-05-21 08:50:22 CDT; 10min ago
      Docs: man:bluetoothd(8)
      Main PID: 1022 (bluetoothd)
      Status: "Running"
      CGroup: /system.slice/bluetooth.service
      └─1022 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd

      May 21 08:50:22 retropie bluetoothd[1022]: Bluetooth daemon 5.23
May 21 08:50:22 retropie bluetoothd[1022]: Starting SDP server
May 21 08:50:22 retropie bluetoothd[1022]: Bluetooth management interface 1.9 initialized

      and sixad --start gives:
No bluetooth adapters found on the system; will try again in 1 second.

Also I uninstalled and reinstalled the PS3 stuff from the retropie config menu.

The controller works plugged in but no longer connects via bluetooth.

      Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Did you try downgrading Bluetooth from 1.1 to 1.0?

In case you didn't here is what you need to type in the terminal:

        wget http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/pool/main/p/pi-bluetooth/pi-bluetooth_0.1.0_armhf.deb
        sudo dpkg -i pi-bluetooth_0.1.0_armhf.deb
        sudo reboot

        Don't sweat it.

No but I'll try it. I get an error though.

dpkg: error processing archive pi-bluetooth_0.1.0_armhf.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
          Errors were encountered while processing:
          pi-bluetooth_0.1.0_armhf.deb

The upgrade updates the on-board Bluetooth to 1.1 and that breaks in RetroPie.

It worked for me using SSH... Maybe try it in SSH?

That's what I'm in, SSH on my machine. Not working for me.

                    wget http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/pool/main/p/pi-bluetooth/pi-bluetooth_0.1.0_armhf.deb

                    part, mang.

Thanks though, ran it, rebooted, testing now.

                      Works perfectly.

Bluetooth starts on boot again. As soon as it rebooted I plugged in the PS3 controller and unplugged it, instant sync.

                          No need to downgrade anymore....

You just need to install raspberrypi-sys-mods

                          sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-sys-mods
