lr-mame2003 DAT file location?
-
I have acquired the appropriate version of the ROMs but I'm unable to find out how to "filter out" clones, puzzles, casino, "porn" and other dodgy titles.
On the RetroPie-setup guide I found that there's already a filtered list but I'm not quite sure how to use it.
MAME 0.78u5 'Lite' DAT File: mame2003-lr-lite (working, no clones, neogeo, PlayChoice/NES multiplay, no rotary/dial/trackball/lightgun controls, no casino/multiplay/quiz/mahjong/fruit_machines/rhythm/mature)
I tried renaming it to gamelist.xml and replacing the generated one but the system completely disappears and upon restarting ES I briefly see a message containing "cannot find <gameList> node in gamelist"
I checked the content of mame2003-lr-lite.xml and indeed it's in a different format... any ideas?

Sorry but I'll have to bump this.
I spent all night without any results, I'm very confused and I feel foolish about this.

@matchaman There are a few ways to go about this, including:
- Use a pre-made .dat file and rebuild your romsets to match it (clrmamepro)
- Use the original romset .dat file (say 0.78) and use a tool to create your own filtered list of romsets (games)
I tend to go for the latter. A very brief overview is here:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2859/how-to-use-mame-with-retropie-help-guide/7Try using romlister mentioned there, if you have issues post up here.

I already have the .dat file from here:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-setup/wiki/MAME#lr-mame2003-mame-2003
However, I don't know where to place it, as replacing gamelist.xml with it doesn't work, they seem to be different formats.

that's not how you use it. you use to rebuild your romset as per the link in @Floob 's post.

I've made a Windows app -- Simple Arcade Multifilter -- that provides an alternative approach. It can provide somewhat fine-tuned control over which of these categories are copied from your full collection to the filtered version.
There's a thread here for it: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/7606/simple-arcade-multifilter-app-for-mame-and-fb-alpha-sets-get-rid-of-adult-and-mahjong-games
Here's how it looks in action:
