@space-cadet Faxanadu had codes instead of saves. However, it might be the best game ever that didn't get a sequel. Absolutely worth playing with save states.

Fester's Quest had the coolest 15 seconds intro back in the day, but the game was awful. At that time I only had Super Mario Bros and Goonies II, so I probably did spend 20 hours trying to finish it, but never did. Castlevania caught by attention a few months later.

'Fester's Quest' flirts with being a good game. There's some decent ideas scattered throughout and I kind of like the item system, as well as getting to meet the rest of the family along the way. It uses the 'Blaster Master' engine, but the weapon power ups are really hit or miss, which makes fully upgrading your gun a necessity.

Did you ever beat 'Goonies II'? It's a game I can go through on one life. Strange enemies aside, I think it captures the subterranean exploration elements of the film very well. As retro platformers go, it has everything that I look for; great sound track, tons of hidden collectable items and cool power-ups that affect progression, slippery ice levels and floaty swimming levels. The Goonies 'r' good enough.

I loved Goonies II as well! I remember beating it a couple times on the original hardware back in the day! I really haven't played it since except last month I loaded it up on RetroPie and played it for a bit. I also loved those rooms you could walk around in:

One of these days I really want to beat the Famicom predecessor. It has much more of an arcade simplicity to it, but it seems like a solid title.

Games that really come to mind here are arcade games because you had to pay for them and cash was pretty limited when i was a teen. You'd never continue so pretty much came down to completing a game in one credit (love the fact they were geared this way too with extra men at certain scores and in Wonderboy there were certain spots in each level that you threw a hammer it'd reveal the developers initials then an extra man (E S C extra, and so on).
One that really comes to mind is Wonderboy, you could play for ages on one credit but never did get to the end. That said completed Wonderboy in Monsterland, Forrest Wardener, (street fighter 2 of course) and thats about it i think. Never got to the end of Shinobi also, came damn close though i reckon.
Not sure if everyone else found it but Ghosts and Goblins was pretty damn hard to get far on a single credit.

                      Good times, great memories.

@mediamogul Nope, Goonies II was never beaten. I think most of the time spent I wired the NES to the stereo, because the soundtrack was awesome, especially in the "caves". I did beat Goonies for the C64 however...

I always forget about that one. It's almost entirely different from the other Goonies games and really more authentic to the movie in just about every way.

I remember the original Goonies game on the NES was pretty rare. Growing up, there was a local arcade that had a PlayChoice-10 with Goonies and that was the only time I got to play the game. It had a different "arcade" feel and at the time I thought the 2nd one was much better.

The first game was actually only released on the Famicom, leading to much confusion outside the land of the rising sun about what the second game was supposed to represent. The cover art was so specific, utilizing actor likenesses from the movie that many believed it was somehow a forerunner to a theatrical sequel in the works. Eventually, I think a lot of people settled on the idea that it was just meant to be a companion piece for the 1985 movie.

Although we had a few PlayChoice-10 machines scattered across my town, 'The Goonies' was never one of the available titles at the time. Many years later, I was at a bowling ally and decided to throw a few quarters in one and I happened to see it listed. I had long since accepted 'Goonies II' as being the only Nintendo game based on the movie and just assumed the "II" had been somehow left off the title screen. So, I was very surprised to find myself playing a prequel to one of my all-time favorite games. I do really like the arcade simplicity and straight forward play mechanics of the first game, but it's never been able to capture my interest like it's followup.

I posted above that I didn't beat Little Nemo but I managed to beat it a few weeks ago.

Well I think the next f*@$&ing hard game I'll try to beat will be Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 and 3. Actually I finished the 1, but using save states compulsively. Then it doesn't count.
