I built a ROM set for lr-MAME2003 with this DAT file (available at https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/MAME), and I was wondering why it was missing obvious titles like Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., and includes a crappy bootleg like Crazy Kong when the entire point is that the clones be stripped out? (Yes, I know I can just add them back in but that defeats the point.) Is there a better stripped-down DAT file I should be using with RetroPie?

      @clemon79

      Despite the listing, 'Crazy Kong' wasn't a bootleg, but actually an officially licensed game based on different hardware. As such, it's actually a parent ROM. However, that still doesn't explain why you don't have a dkong or dkongjr after rebuilding in clrmamepro. What guide did you follow? Also, did you start with a full 0.78 ROM set?

        I have Dkong after using the Lite dat file, so that's weird.
        BUT, If I must say, I like the FBA version better. The sound samples are closer to the original sound from the cabinets.

          @AndersHP Just to be sure, with Mame you have to add a sample file for Donkey Kong, of some sounds will be missing.
          Sorry if you already knew this, I personally had to figure out why sound was so terrible :)

          I just downloaded the XML, and @clemon79 is right :
          $ grep -i kong mame2003-lr-lite.xml
          <game name="ckong">

Crazy Kong (set 1)

          <game name="dkong3">

Donkey Kong 3 (US)

          Maybe the xml was modified ?

            @Sano Yes, I figued this out myself also, but even after I added the samples, I still think the sound is better in the FBA version.

              yep, it doesn't include dkong. romlister is a tricky beast to use and the lite set doesn't include a bunch of stuff that i ended up manually adding. feel free to create a better one for the community ;)

                @dankcushions would it be filtered out because it requires samples?

                  i forget the logic i used in romlister but that could be it. couldn't find any other sample games in the dat! in retrospect i would have included them.

                    Yeah, the only reasoning I can think of is that some brain-trust somewhere deemed them "non-working" because of the need for samples, which just strikes me as idiotic.

                    It's certainly easy enough to go through the list of games with samples and decide which ones I want and throw them in manually (I have the entire set), but it's just silly that I'd need to.

                    I know very little of FBA, but perhaps I need to look into it. Does DK and DK Jr. require samples with that as well?

                      i think it was likely my misunderstanding of what samples were when i created them (ages ago now). if i recall correctly, samples was something you could enable/disable in romlister.

                        Well, I'll have a look at romlister and see if I can cobble together a better .dat with it. :)

                          Tried FBA; lost interest when I realized it didn't support Joust. ;)

                          (Yes, I know I should be piecemealing all of this together using the functionality of the Arcade folder. I don't wanna right now. ;))

                          The chief reason the sounds are "closer" in DK on FBA (and AdvanceMame, for that matter) is, I think, because the later revisions of the DK driver support the three-pitch "run" samples as opposed to the single one in the .78 romset. (The "thud" sample at the start of the game in the FBA sample set is dreadful though. :))

                          It would be nice if MAME2010 were (a lot) more stable so I could just go to that, but in the meantime we have to dance with the women who brought us. :)

                            Okay, so in order to use romlister I need an xml file of some sort. It says that MAME generates it, but I don't know where to look for it. I tried generating one on my own within the romlister settings but I don't think it included any of the necessary metadata since it wasn't filtering at all. (When I say "no pedal games" and it still returns OutRun and RoadBlasters, something's wrong. ;)) So how would I get a full .xml (I have the full set) that I can use as a jumping off point?

                              you can just rename the mame2003/mame 0.78 .dat file to .xml :) you can get it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2TMeZ6iEFvHTkc2TXZOOFhCRzQ/view?usp=sharing
