New Comic Book Theme!
-
@TMNTturtlguy @jdrassa So I was doing some more work and ran into that black description bug again. After staying up all night trying to figure out what is causing it, I figured it out. It's Kid's Mode. There is some sort of conflict between the two.
If I update emulation station to get rid of the black bars, I lose Kid's Mode. If I update Kid's Mode, the black description bug comes back. If I update emulationstation, the black bars go away, but the Kid's Mode is broken again. It's 100% repeatable. Any ideas?
-
@Panther7 yeah, that makes sense, I've not yet updated Kidsmode (last rebase was may 7th), so any improvements after that are not yet present.
-
@Zigurana Thanks for the confirmation @Zigurana , @Panther7 There has been a ton of updates and work done to ES in the last 3 months or so. At times some small updates are pushed out daily. It looks like kids mode was updated about the same time as this small bug became present in ES. You should notice that several, if not all themes with meta data descriptions are affected by this, and that other updates are not available while running the kids mode build either. If you take a look i am guessing that screen saver options were not yet available on may 7th either?

@TMNTturtlguy that trick about
<color>
doesn't work as I expected. Delete that item from the bottom of your to do list! :-)
#fail -
@meleu #thanks and #sorry - I haven't booted a retropie in about a week....i am starting to shake and go through deep withdrawals! Thanks for testing it out - bummer it doesn't work. I will use the great work started by @Panther7 and create a full set of launching images. With photoshop and the original files it shouldn't be to hard. I just need to find the time to get it done!
-
@TMNTturtlguy @Zigurana I just deleted Kid's mode for now, mayble I'll try it again in the future. Sorry for hijacking this thread, I just wanted to make sure that people capable of fixing a bug like this were made aware that it still exists and a method to reproduce it, to aid them in solving it when the time comes. I'm not sure how to report bugs otherwise!

Love the comic book theme, it made me forget all about attract mode and the hyperpie stuff. Not too much to it, not too little, it is perfect. My one question is whether you will be adding more collections to system choices. I notice the collection menu now has as many choices as attract mode had, will you be adding namco/metal slug/pac-man/arcade classics/ etc collections now that they are available in the collection menus of retropie?
-
@Invincer The ability to add custom collections to ES isn't implemented yet. It will, eventually, but for now you only have "All", "Favorites" and "Last Played".
@TMNTturtlguy - maybe a suggestion, for scalability purposes, is to implement a default theme, taking advantage of @jdrassa 's latest changes!

@pjft Thanks, I will look into this in the coming days, I used to have a default theme when I was completing all of the others so that the theme would not break, I will look into what i can do. I will have to look at what change might need to take place to use @jdrassa new features. I followed his thread enough to know it won't break old theme code, but not sure if i can just implement portions of his new work or not? It is on my to do list, but probably not until after i get splash screens created.
-
@TMNTturtlguy Sure, not in any way urgent - it's more to support any collections people might want to setup, rather than having to ask you for custom themes for every single one :)
I believe it's just a "theme.xml" file on the root folder of the theme that will be used for a default theme should a folder for the system not exist. I think there's a few other new things, though, like the ability to set the font for the logo text and color in case there's no system logo image (which likely won't, for a default system theme as you won't know the name in advance).
But not a big problem there.
Thanks! Hope you're doing great.

@pjft
Sorry @TMNTturtlguy for this off topic post.I had an idea for after you added collections, is there a possibility you could add an option for a upper layer for the carousel that has these (All, Computers, Consoles, Favorites, Handhelds, Arcades, and Collections).
You would choose one like it was a system then it would open another layer of the carousel that would have the systems or collections available for that choice. It would make it a lot easier to find things quicker for those of us with 20+ systems.
I understand if this wouldn't work with how ES currently works and I totally stole this idea from Launchbox.
@TMNTturtlguy sorry again for this off topic post, also have you thought about doing launch images for the systems eventually?
-
@Syhles i will be doing launching screens, I think I have been calling them splshscreens, but look above in the posts and you can see examples of what I am working on.
As for your request for the carousel, that would be a major overhaul of a lot of things including ES and how the themes themselves work. Basically everthing would need to change! Wait for @pjft next update with collections and I think they may be somewhat inline with what you are looking for.
-
@Syhles Hi, and thanks for the feedback.
I can't say that that hasn't been something that has crossed my mind in the past. It would certainly be something useful to have.
Alas, as @TMNTturtlguy , it would likely require a tremendous rearchitecture of how things are organized, both at the data level as well as the code level.
It's not that it'd be impossible, but it certainly isn't a small undertaking, nor one I'd have a tremendous experience with in regards to that part of the code.
The collections will either be at the top level, or as a subfolder under the "My Collections" system - user choice. But that's as far as it'll get in terms of system organization, at least for the foreseeable future.
Best.

@TMNTturtlguy When I loaded the TMNTturtleguy ComicBook_SE-Wheelart theme through emulation station, there was a 60 meg .git folder that got loaded too. Is this something that is required or can it be deleted from the installation?
-
@hurricanefan I am not a hundred percent sure why git puts that folder in there. It is not something I upload. I know for sure if you copy the theme out of the folder you downloaded it to and place it in /home/pi/.emulationstation/themes/ you can delete it.

@hurricanefan said in New Comic Book Theme!:

Can be deleted.See my post below. -
FYI - I think you need to use sudo rm -r to delete it.
-
@tmntturtlguy @meleu Thanks. Is there a way to fix this so other users don't lose the extra disk space on install of this theme?
-
@hurricanefan it's a fair request. It can be done in esthemes scriptmodule. I'll try to submit a Pull Request when I have a chance.
-
@meleu can you also add this theme : https://github.com/rxbrad/es-theme-gbz35
There is also a dark variant on different branch
