PLEASE HELP! Weird connection problem!

Hey guys, recently got a Raspberry Pi a few days ago with everything already installed including some roms. I tried to connect an external usb hard drive to expand my roms... I absolutely somehow just messed it all up. Without the usb hard drive my Raspberry Pi is useless I can't do anything but when I plug in the usb hard drive it comes up with a message saying 'we cant find any systems! Check that your paths are correct in the systems configuration file, and your game directory has atleast one game with the correct extension' I can use my wireless keyboard when the usb drive is connected but can't when it's not. I tried formatting the SD card and reloading the SD image back onto the SD card but for some reason my Raspberry Pi will only respond when my hard drive is connected. I tried googling trying my best to find an answer but no luck.
But short question is how do I configure my Raspberry Pi to respond back to my SD card without the USB drive. Because atm it will only respond to my USB drive connected and it won't find any systems whilst connected to my hard drive.

Pi Model or other hardware: Pi 3 B
Power Supply used: OTD 5.1V 2500mA PSU
RetroPie Version: 4.1
Built From: SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: 2TB EXTERNAL WD Hard Drive
Controller used: Mini Wireless 2.4Ghz Keyboard Mouse Remote
Error messages received: 'we cant find any systems! Check that your paths are correct in the systems configuration file, and your game directory has atleast one game with the correct extension'

Do you have a USB keyboard that you can use to test? Or another computer on the same network that you can connect with using PuTTY or a similar SSH application?

Start over. Re-format the SD card clean to FAT32. Re-install Retropie into the SD card. Install the SD card into RPi with the wireless keyboard only without the hard drive. If everything boots up properly quit Retropie and power down. Reinstall the hard drive. and power back on. Let us know what happens.
What's the voltage and current requirement on the hard drive? Or the model number. It could be that your power supply does not adequately power up the whole setup. -

Thanks for the response. I formatted the SD card again and reloaded retropie. Still had the same problem so what I did was removed my wireless playstation controllers and plug my hard drive in a different usb port (because it wouldn't boot up without the hard drive in) this time I had a different error message. I turned it off, unplugged the usb then turned it back on without the USB and then everything was back to normal. It's bizarre, but I'm glad everything is back to normal.
