the verbose log would have indicated all relevant overrides, and in addition to that the relevant configs are
/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg,

/opt/retropie/configs/mame-libretro/retroarch.cfg or
/opt/retropie/configs/arcade/retroarch.cfg depending on where your roms are
and for fbeo,
/opt/retropie/configs/fba/retroarch.cfg or

anything changed within the MAME menu is stored in additional non-human readable files detailed here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-mame2003/#mame-menu and should be deleted before investigating any retroarch-side config issues.

You could just make a custom collection and then just add 2 player games to it. I did this to create a separate list of vertical screen arcade games from horizontal ones.

I don't remember, I used the wiring from raspicade.
But the wiring doesn't care, I think you really have to set usbhid.quirks

You my friend are a genius! I set controls on player 1 to "Select" = "Start" and "Start" = Nothing and player 2 "Select" = Nothing and "Start" = "Start". Works like a champ! I wish it was a little more intuitive, but it seems to work great.

I am using 2 iBuffalo SNES controllers plus an arcade stick too, which are connected all the time through usb. And I don't have this problem, just saying it. What I don't understand, why do you use xboxdrv? These gamepads are working out of the box.

I also use RetroPie joystick-selection script, which lets you set the gamepads as player 1, 2, 3, 4 in what order you want. After restart, this selection remains. Now, when I think back, I installed this because I had the problem after restart the order wasn't fixed without this script. It was randomly changed. This script gives fixed order, either system wide or even different settings for each emulator.

Not sure if I did understand your problem and if you already use this script.

@scopaust As with other controller that don't have a hotkey, you can use Select instead of a hotkey.

@kasimar1 Player selection is done with the Select button, not with D-Pad. It's not a mapping problem, just the wrong button.

@indvrkness Your post does not include all of the details from THIS POST which you are supposed to read and follow, and it doesn't look like you have read and followed the documentation that actually addresses using these controllers.

@caver01 Thanks a lot! Yes, it's an USB port, the original plan was with Raspberry 2 (so no WiFi) but now it's using a Raspberry 3 (so the USB port could be an optional 'cause WiFi). The main purpose is to attach keyboards/gamepads or transfer ROMs to the Bartop.

@simonster yesss thanks so much! That was it, I had to renter the config and configure p2, I thought that for some reason if I re enter the config menu it would start over!

MAME libretro works with the arcade buttons, mame4all doesn't, neo-geo also works correctly, did not test with the rest.

What do you mean, it detects it?

Can you give some information about your setup, are you using mk_arcade_joystick? How have you configured it? What hardware are you using?

I wish I could help with your direct issue, but if you can't get it to work, you could always purchase the N64 controllers by 8bitdo&retrobit.
