@mitu This is what I needed! Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it!

Quick question for your first point "Install the latest EEPROM on a microsd card, this will update the bootloader so it supports USB"

How do I get the initial "bootloader" on the micro card in the first place? Or should I just follow the link and install EEPROM straight away. Sorry if this is a silly question.

You can use the "collections" functionality to have all the Pokemon games on a single list. When a game is selected, it will launch the game with the emulator required for the rom. I recommend checking the documentation ( https://retropie.org.uk/docs/ ), so you can setup the games with the best emulators. Once that's done, check this guide (look up collections) : https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/EmulationStation

@mikeahays could be your power supply. I had this happen with a junk power supply. Maybe it's a different problem in your case.

Yes, you can - you'll have to install Ubuntu/Debian or a compatible enough distro (like Linux Mint) and then follow the Docs.

@mattrixk Going over the history of this I would say the best first Pokemon game I ever played was Crystal, I played and beat yellow before Crystal but Crystal had the held items in addition to 2 newer types

also bug type Pokemon while they existed in the previous gen, they weren't as weak in gen 2 and they had better attacks like Fury Cutter and Megahorn so the gen 2 games were far more balanced, and they didn't have as many exploits if any either.

@blackshadow Interesting. From everything I read on pbp files it only costs a bit of load time because of the format. I didn't consider that the compression would affect it as well, considering the fact that I'm always playing SNES and GBA games still zipped and have never had an issue.

That said, I do plan on sticking with pbp files for multi-disc games since the 30% compression I get from it will help save space on my SD card for more games in the future

@jenny18 a spinner automatically detects as a mouse. You shouldnt have to do anything to get it working. In a mame game you might have to enable spinner/trackball/mouse in the game. A spinner never will detect as a controller.

So its looking like I want to do the mausberry varient if these power mods, which varient are people using mostly to get what I'm after tho?
      https://mausberry-circuits.myshopify.com/products/shutdown-circuit-use-your-own-switch

direct-plug micro-USB, 2-pin spring terminal header, or the versions with a USB female plug?

I'm still not 100% certain how this works but it looks like the switch only controls either the reset or power switch? If that's the case does the power switch still power everything directly?

What I'm thinking is this correct me if I'm wrong?

Power switch = hard on off power (no script for safe shut down)

Reset switch = mausberry switch with script that if in emulator and pressed quits the emulator and if not in emulator and is pressed runs script for safe reset?

'I've made sure that none of the other roms are in the .bin format'

What do you mean by this?

You could try replacing the bios file with one downloaded from another source.
You can also try some eboots (ps1 games in a psp compatible format, also known as psx2psp). These are just one file each (.pbp) and should work fine.

Thanks again for your help, pal.

Quite a bit's happened since I last looked at this thread. Primarily, I've bought another Pi! I'm putting a second one together, myself, from scratch - and I'm beginning to get my head around Raspbian. I think this second Pi will end up becoming another RetroPie platform, but one that I've tailored myself from the ground up, and attached to a TV rather than confined to a cabinet. I'm enjoying the challenge - plus, I feel slightly less of a fraud than I did a couple of months ago...!!!

Can I ask, does the Pi have a known 'threshold', when it comes to emulation? For instance, can it make a solid fist of the N64 and/or original PlayStation? And what about slightly more niche stuff from the same era, like the Saturn...?

Thanks again to anyone who can advise,

      DH.

@TMNTturtlguy In the cases the button didn't work, I also tried SSH. the Pi was hung and not responding to that either. I don't think I have seen a case where the button failed and ssh still worked.

      @Lovelyboi said in PS1 - PSX:

@Darksavior So, do you need a rom and .bin file for every game? What about the BIOS. Is that just one file for all games? Thanks for the help. I'm waaay new to all of this.

You can read the link I posted for the supported file formats. I prefer to just download converted .pbp's due to being smaller in size and are only one file, which makes for a neater library.

As for the bios, yes, one file. There's different version numbers of the bios that exist. Just choose one.

I have essentially the same kit, but mine was from Canakit. It will do the job. Yes you can set it up from a Mac.

There are a ton of guides online and you would do well to familiarize yourself with the wiki content here. For real. Read it. Understand it.

+1 Super brother point to you for taking on a project for your kid brother.

@Forlife said in Optimal way to shut down RetroPie? (also other questions..):

...or actually go to menu, quit, shut down?

      Disco!

      Does it make a difference?

You risk corrupting your SD card otherwise.

Also, is it necessary to have a usb keyboard?

It's not absolutely necessary, but I would highly recommend keeping one handy for maintenance.
