Oh... for easiest plug and play from a Pi, you probably want a controller board that identifies as a keyboard, or as a 360 controller. There are many of these on the market. Watch out for some gotchas with ones marketed as Xin-Mo, there are actually several makes being sold under that name and they aren't all the same (Paradise Arcade in particular carries ones labeled Xin-Mo that may require a fresh kernel compilation).

I guess no one has any input?
I have noticed that the down button frequently double clicks in ES menus, and the start and coin buttons are messed up, my coin button for player one also is set as sstart for player two in some mame games.
i think the only option is a fresh instal and start again.

@spruce_m00se Why do you need to back up scraped roms? You back up your retroarch.cfg.

@ruxton_bruce the controllers use "input_enable hotkey_btn ="and you can assign the keyboard key to "input_enable hotkey =" then set both the exit key and hotkey on your keyboard to the same button. You will need to use the controller to get into the retroarch gui though since the hotkey and exit key are now on the same button.

@battlecat The detail on the front and sides are cut vinyl, I just designed them on my computer and cut them on our vinyl cutter at work, it's usually used for signage so the small off-cuts left over are idea for this sort of thing.

It's been a while and I have since uninstalled Reicast, but if memory serves, I did have the res as low as possible. I might give it another day in court sometime soon.

You can create your own udev rules to assign constant device nodes to your joysticks. See, e.g., https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=168221.

      This one is resolved.
For everyone having the same issue.
In order to enable 3rd and 4th player through joysticks, you have to first install the ps3 or Xbox controller drivers through the retro pie setup menu.
Do not input any specific button configuration inside the per console config files.

      Update

Yesterday I went ahead and FTP'ed the retroarch.cfg to this folder on the SD card:

      \retropie\configs\from_retropie\configs\all\retroarch.cfg
-- Note to be honest I am at work and not in front of the RPi3 so I am guessing that was the path to the file.

I rebooted the Rpi3 and went down to the game-room to see what the controls now did. Well they worked! They all did something and that was great. No they are not all correctly mapped to the MAME/iPAC2's default settings. One example of an issue is that in MAME to exit MAME you traditionally do a P1 & P2. On this current button configuration I have to do a P2&P1. This will need to be changed in the config.

I also noticed that Player 1's buttons correspond to getting into and out of menus. I will need to disable those menus and the white dialog config box in the end.

Otherwise MAME setup is looking good!

One question is this can I create a retroarch.cfg file for just the MAME versions I am using and let the original mapping work for all other consoles? What I eventually want to do is to have matching USB joysticks on a hook on either side of the cab in case I want to hit some SMB3 or old school SNES game.

      Thank you,
      Battlecat
