      Hey @mitu.

Just what I was after. jstest is exactly what I wanted. As yet I haven't done anything with evtest or sdl2-jstest, but I've taken notes and they are now in the tool box for continued retro-pie adventures.

Again. Thanks very much for your help.

@SaturnX said in New Arcade Build - 6 or 7 buttons? Help me decide!:

Is it possible to configure them as such? (with 4 being duplicated?)

It depends if you are going to use any game that uses more than 6 buttons, i would generally recommend going for 8 buttons with no duplicate, and remapping the emulators on a per-game basis as you see fit.

@caver01 @edmaul69 The Fn plus F-key is how the keyboard is designed to work, so just changing the kb type will make it function as designed. It needs to be adjusted to get "normal" PC behaviours.

i don't think your layout is quit right. you don't need a set of p1 start / insert coin buttons AND start and select - by default p1's 'start' is 'p1 start', and p1's 'select' is 'p1 insert coin', etc.

if you still want to do it, you may have to configure the pX start and insert coin buttons after the initial setup manually, as i'm not sure you can bind two buttons to the same retropad button during the initial setup.

also your button layout is... weird to me. start and select under the action buttons? bit late to change that now, though :)

      i would also have like:

      Y X R1 L1 B A R2 L2

since you only have 6 action buttons, looks like you may have to use:

      Y X L1 B A R1

however that might not pair well with default controls in arcade emulators, so you may need to reconfigure them after.

      @Capeman

      Second this:

On an opinion note: I've always thought that hyperspin and attractmode wheel themes look cluttered and confusing, they just don't have the elegance and simplicity of a good ES theme... but that is just personal opinion and up for discussion, haha.

That’s right. Retropad abstraction. . . Thanks for the reminder about that terminology.

None of this is actually a problem—it’s just a matter of development solving the needs of everyone AND configuration solving the needs of an individual project.

It has been a while since I was deep into these details as I tend to come and go with other projects/hobbies getting in the way. Someone gave me a Pi4 which is the first in my collection, so naturally, I put it into the arcade build and setup a fresh image of RetroPie 4.8. Now, I have LOTS of work to get it going again, so I am re-learning the controller configs, transcribing some stuff from 2003 to 2003 plus etc., not to mention getting some of my GPIO inputs working again, dealing with different HDMI cords, USB-C, and on and on.

There is actually what I will call a second generation of nostalgia in all of this nostalgia!

The 'Generic 104-key PC' would likely be the best model setting. Also, the keyboard layout settings are all set to UK by default, so if you need anything else, select 'Other'. It appears as though the Rii i8 has an AltGr key on the right, so 'Right Alt (AltGr)' is applicable to you as well.
