      @mitu

      I gave that a try and neither screen would boot up. On my monitor it was showing no input detected. I tried both hdmi ports as well. I was able to ssh into it with no problems so i know it booted up fully.

      I want to avoid blank loading screen time. Instead of blank loading screens I want to display some short clips and family photos.
      I had some success with "splashscreens" catalogue. But it works only on external screen with HDMI and then only for clips because the images are overridden with console logging screen.
      The 3.5 LCD only displays console logs until the UI is loaded.

      You can create your own script(s) to show images/videos on the LCD screen, by using the EmulationStation scripting support.

      I was able to disable the EmulationStation loading screen but is there a way to display something instead of blank screen.

      No. The only thing shown during loading is the ES splashscreen (which you disabled).

      However, you can use the RetroPie's boot splashscreen to display an image during boot and increase the time it's shown so that by the time it stops, EmulationStation is already loaded.

      I tried adding a console "launching" screen but when launching a game the screen is mostly blank and for a few moments the picture shows and than the emulator is still loading with black screen.
      Is there a way to add an loading image or mp4 for each game instead of for each console.

      Apart from the regular splashscreen support in runcommand, there's no other mechanism in RetroPie to add additional loading screens. But once the emulator is loaded, there's nothing RetroPie can do - it's up to each individual emulator to display things.

      Is there a way to simplify the retropie UI to scroll and select games directly without emulator selection?
      Also instead of just the name of the game I wish to show an image to select like for choosing a console.

      Probably easiest is to use the Grid View support in EmulationStation and show only games' images instead of the list. You can try also other front-ends, like Pegasus or Attract-Mode.

      Just FYI for posterity here. LCD was good.

      ExperimentalPi response was sitting in my inbox this morning. Known issue. Required software/firmware update: https://www.experimentalpi.com/PiBoy-DMG-Firmware-and-Script-Updates_b_42.html

      The firmware definitely got it, but there's some new stuff in the software update as well (like the ability to specify the power LED brightness (which is much appreciated). Firmware updater also states that the software update is needed.

      On a side note, I tried to update via VirtualBox first which I thought ended up bricking my son's PiBoy. Green/Red/None eternal power LED cycle. Threw the updater to my cough work windows box cough and the updater wouldn't recognize the PiBoy. The solution was to remove the battery so the only power it had was via the usb cable to the windows box. Was able to update then and the PiBoy is good to go there (just about had a heart attack).

      Anyhoo. Documented here now. Thanks all!

      You'll have to offer more info than that - what type/model ? Do you have a link to the model ? Also, did you try my suggestion about unplugging the HDMI cable and see if the main screen switches to the LCD screen ?

      @ss3000

      Try setting the overscan in /boot/config.txt using:

      overscan_left= overscan_right=

      Edit: Of course if that works, you may have to reconfigure your RetroArch display settings to accomodate.

      One thing I learned is the retropie setup on Linux creates partitions on the sd card and Windows cannot see them.

      If you wanted to format your card back to a format Windows can see (which would be the 16gb)

      No extra programs needed.

      Hope this helps

      I ended up finding a solution. A fresh image seemed to have solved all the issues. Not entirely sure why, but I think it may have something to do with the way my GPIO pins were set for the Borkin button.

      Hate having to start over, but it's nice to be up and operating again!

      @batman I was looking into some LCDs too and I added most of those to my wish list while I was laying in bed the other night lol. But I discovered those 2k monitors and the capacitive touch monitors when I was making this post. Really good looking LCDs!

      @glennlake Sorry if I wasn't clear. The screen is working, newer kernels support it. I just can't get it to work with the romtastick script. I was thinking something was up with the script as when you bring up the menu to choose the ILI9341 it doesn't seem to stick, thus why I looked at the json file to see if I could force it, and at least there it looked like it was set correctly.

      I tried tonight with the quick install from adafruit and had the same result. I'm going to try again tomorrow with their image to see if the cause is anything that was upgraded when I updated packages during setup. Thanks for your help.

      @glennlake said in new pie user. how to install LCD to work with retropie:

      @isayno The pi3 needs 2 to 2.5 amps by it's self to run well. If the screen is pulling power from the pi I think that is your problem. I couldn't find a manual for your screen but in the remarks on Amazon's site saying he had some problems. I will paste it here:
      "Works pretty well and Does what I need it to do. I followed the instructions others have posted to get the pi to display to the screen and it works perfectly. Has a weird quirk which I cant seem to figure out. I decided not to power the screen from the USB of the pi so that I don't have any power issues when the pi is running. But if my power source is separate I.e 1 power source for the pi then another for the screen nothing will display on to the screen. However if I have 1 power source lets say a battery bank with 2 USB ports and the pi and screen are powered off that everything works fine. But once I power the screen on separate battery bank nothing is displayed again. Which I find odd that the screen needs to be powered on by what seems to be the same power circuit as the pi and that it's not just hdmi. Weird but for my application they're on the same power source anyways."
      It looks like the power source for the pi and the screen needs to be from the same source. My guess is the ground may be the issue but I have no other info. Hope this helps.
