I'm wondering why Retropie doesn't come with these other, more compatible cores as their default (instead of Mame). Seems based on what you folks are saying, it's a better option.

it does? lr-fbneo is in the default image and is recommended in the docs

lr-mame2003-plus is an optional install, which makes sense to me as it has an ever-changing romset, so you'd need to manually build it (the ones in circulation appear years out of date). i don't think that's a reasonable expectation for users to do by default.

the same could be said of lr-fbneo, but it appears pretty trivial to acquire near-current sets.

It should work after configuring inputs in ES. What arcade core are you using?

Be forewarned - with some arcade games, one clone works better than the original/main.

Indeed, see these lists for examples:

Even in a PC you'll need a decent processor, at least if you want accurate emulation. Until someone finds a miraculous optimization shortcut in KI's hardware emulation, I'd say yes, it's currently impossible in this hardware.

a hacked original xbox could run it pretty well on a humble pentium 3:

...because there's an x86 dynarec which helped massively. however, MAME on ARM does not have such a luxury, which I don't see changing.

I guess I'm wondering if there's some database somewhere of arcade games and what their joystick/button layout was. That will help me to know how many buttons I should plan for on each of the cabinets.

      https://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/

can filter by controller number, type, etc.

@djdiabolik yes under input general just map any combo you'd like. I use "player1 start + player2 start + X". Just press all the buttons at the same time when mapping your custom combo.

The home button is not supported.

retropie also has a documentation about clrmamepro, which allows to ascertain the romset is compatible with the emulator instead of trying random romsets...

As the title says: which emulator are you guys prefering on the PI4?
FBNEO is great, no doubt about that one, but which emulator are you using for the rest?

Good question. Hope this helps you:

Try to test the encoder using jstest - (see here) - to check if the joystick and buttons produce correct results.

Is there a schematic you've followed to wire the joystick and buttons to make sure they're correctly wired ? Or does the encoder has labels for each connections indicating the correct wiring ?

it is just a simple editing one line in the config to rotate it but is there any reason for or against doing so.

The reason for would be to have a vertical/upright cabinet I suppose. The reason against it - might have a performance impact.
