@buffyp00h said in Audio stutter in some SNES games on surround receiver:

All have the same problem on soundbar systems (and likely also on surround receivers).

I just don't get why these particular games generate hdmi sound that gets wrecked by so many setups, one would think there was a way to fix this at the source - the generation of sound on the pi/other device.

Just my 0.02 here, the world of modern TVs and home theater/surround sound devices is needlessly complicated for these simple old tasks we are trying to recreate here with simple digital signals (ironically that are emulations of old analog signals).

What I would try to see if it helps:
Many TVs have a "game mode" that is intended to reduce or eliminate "signal processing" to enable a more pure, delay free signal and timings. Many surround sound receivers have something similar, although it is usually called Pure Audio or Direct Sound mode. You might see if your receiver has this option and try it to see if it eliminates audio hitches.

For what it's worth, I have an Onkyo receiver at home and even with modern consoles I have noticed that something in the HDMI convergence where all video inputs are routed to a single HDMI output to the TV will cause a 'gap' in sounds sometimes. (After a dead silence of any kind, the first sound made is either dropped entirely or gets cut so I only hear part of it before normal audio resumes. Sort of like the audio stream has to buffer up before it becomes stable again.)

EDIT: Hit the submit button too soon and wasn't done typing.

Yes, it requires some setup but it's working on my Retropie on a Raspberry Pi 3B. Loads of fun and laughs with the mates, strongly recommended.

@retroprogrammer Don't give up, the best advice i can give is to never try to learn all in one time. Instead, focus on little things (like you did with the splash screen) and you will be gathering knowledge. Find an art style that you like and have fun doing it.

Since you like pixel art, you can give a try to Derek's pixel art tutorial, it's pretty much the style that you make on your splash screen.

well just tried it on a psp. It was way better there. it just small. I missed some jumps but I think cuz im very rusty maybe. Had to use 1.1 so it wouldn't tare.
That's based on the x9 emulator so im guessing my tv is so crappy.

@herb_fargus said in Don't try this at home, kids:

what we really need is a sqlite filter with tags rather than having to edit the emulators config but that's more of a new frontend thing or a large update to ES. one can hope anyways

This is what @fieldofcows suggested in this thread: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/6985/metadata-improvements-in-emulationstation

While he's been busy with the WSOD fix, I put together a fairly comprehensive design doc that will allow a lot more power to users and theme designers. I'm hoping he and/or I can get it implemented sometime over the next few months. Fingers crossed...

I'm aware of the favorites mod.

But I was looking for something more geared at collections like having all MARIO games in one section within ES

Very nice job on those cabinets! Just Beautiful.
I personally like the Tron one. ;-)

I kinda miss the fighting game cabinet designs. Most guys when they build bar top cabinets they use Nintendo characters or classic arcade game designed decals/bezels. I would love to see a nice Street Fighter or any NeoGeo fighting game designed cabinet.
Another thing I wonder is the button layout out. Is that chosen on purpose or just matching the decal design?
I cannot imagine to play all too long on such a cabinet without getting wrist pain. When I used to build my own arcade sticks I always went with the Japanese stick and button layouts or the same one like Hori does for their sticks. Check here.

@Dominus I just installed love from the experimental menu of the setup script on my pi 3 on a fresh image and it runs fine (can't say the performance will be that great on the B+ though) mari0 should just install with the script. One caveat is that I'm an idiot and accidentally replaced the love logo with the 3do logo for the carbon theme but I've since fixed that. The original mari0 won't work btw as its outdated and incompatible with love 0.10.0. We use an updated branch for it
