What's the output of the aplay -l and aplay -L commands ? What settings do you have for Audio in EmulationStation's menu (device/card) ?

Also, please add some info about your setup, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

I think I faced exactly the same thing as you yesterday. I got an error message where it said something about the audio, sorry don't remember the error message. I tried a few things and gave up and just installed everything (Raspbian and Retropie) again. It should be another way though..... Its absurd you have to reinstall an OS because of this....

Besides my custom es_system file not working, when I add it the only system shown is one is sg-1000. I can live with that issue as the custom file is set up to order the systems by maker and old to new.

If the file is incorrect, EmulationStation might not load it. There's a log file in $HOME/.emulationstation/es_log.txt that might help diagnose this.

But every time I exit emulationstation I get a blank purple screen and have to logout of ubuntu and back in, not the end if the world though.

That might be the (Gnome) terminal from where EmulationStation is started. Have you tried typing exit or pressing Ctrl+C Ctrl+D at that point ?

I removed cfg file from arcade folder and I'm back on RGUI. Still having some problems as keys set in ES does correspond to those in RetroArch but I guess I have to do some further steps removing "broken" retroarch.cfg files from few places and then reinstall RA from setup script and hope it will fix it.
Thanks a lot for your help!!!!!!!

@MRL2051 said in N64 roms not* saving once emulation station has been rebooted - linked to audio error?:

Something I read suggested the volume error could mess up the save state for N64, but maybe it is completely unrelated. I can save my N64 roms and go back to them as long as I keep the emulation station running. As soon as I restart my pi it deletes the most recent save.

No, there's no relation between the 2 things - that error message is from EmulationStation and it appears at start-up, but you don't see it unless you launch a game.

How reliable is your SDcard ? This kind of behavior (files disappearing) is usually an indication of bad/failing sdcard.

@colosso25 Did you encounter any random "stops" for 1-2 seconds of the system? Because that's what me and some others experienced using the headphone jack. The only solution that we found was to use HDMI sound.

No, not that I know of. I haven't been testing stuff out at that time. I was looking for a solution to this problem.
