@Yobiwan for Windows I personally like notepad++ for editing text files.

You can add an XML tool that helps if you're editing your gamelist.xml files and accidentally mess up the syntax.

Got it working, should have explored the set up more to see I needed to install the USB ROM service.

      Thanks

@boomspar Generally BIOS and ROMs are not provided by RetroPie unless there's free/open source. That's why the BIOS requirements are always mentioned on the emulator's page. Just like for ROMs, you're responsible for copying the necessary BIOS files in place - they don't come with the package installed from the RetroPie-Setup.

@eckaji my apologies, you're totally right it should all function correctly with current retropie. i was mistakenly looking at the ngp installation script, which is purely documentation, so it doens't really matter that it doens't have .7z as a supported extension there (in fact i don't think many/any of the installation scripts have been updated in that regard). thanks for your work :)

I was able to get Version 4.0.2 working (https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases).

The problem might have been a faulty microsd card (two microsd cards destroyed by two rpi's in one day :-( ).

I recommend using etcher (https://etcher.io/) to burn the microsd card, it does a verify after writing the image.

Wow, I have been struggling forever to figure out what was going on with this issue! I was pretty sure I was doing everything right, but then I stumbled in here, and sure enough, I have the 2 cfg file issue too!

Since it's been quite a while since this post was last active, I chose to copy the entry to
/opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg, rather than delete the apparently-redundant one, as who knows what's changed since then! :)

      <system> <name>dreamcast</name> <fullname>Dreamcast</fullname> <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/dreamcast</path> <extension>.cdi .chd .cue .gdi .sh .zip .CDI .CHD .CUE .GDI .SH .ZIP</extension> <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ dreamcast %ROM%</command> <platform>dreamcast</platform> <theme>dreamcast</theme> </system>

Incidentally, a lot has certainly changed on the hardware side too. If you've got a RPi4, install the Flycast core instead of Reicast. Holy moly it's so very close to the original experience now!

Thanks to all involved for bringing up and solving this issue; I can finally play around with some of these games instead of tweaking settings endlessly now!
