@biojudgement The Raspberry Pi 4 has bluetooth built in. So you don't need an adapter. In the DOCS section of this website there a page with instructions on how to do bluetooth pairing. (retropie.org.uk/docs/Bluetooth-Controller/)

You might also need to map the controller in EmulationStation. That's covered in the docs as well.

Also, if you plug in the PS3 controller with a Mini-USB cable, it should show up as a normal D-Input controller.

@ase1981 said in PS3 connected by USB on RPI4 running most recent Retropie:

However I am confused about the "plug and play" sync when using USB. Once it is synced, will I be able to disconnect the USB wire and still use the controller?

For a simply USB connection, the controller doesn't need to be 'synced', you can just press the PS button and it will start working, i.e. you can configure it and it will be available for the emulators included.

I don't want to be tethered to the RPi.

Using USB, it won't be 'tethered' exclusively to the Pi, that happens only when you pair it via Bluetooth.

I see there are bluetooth syncing options available, but it looks complicated and I would rather avoid that if possible.

It's really not complicated and I think you should give it a try.

Also is it possible to have more than 1 ps3 controller synced and running at the same time for 2 player games?

      Yes.

@mitu hello and thank you for your answer.

I did what you suggested and nothing happened, but after trying over an over I could make the controller to work.

The thing was that the system didn´t recognize the HID of the device, so I modified the cmdline.txt file to ignore special drivers. After a reboot the controller was detected as a ps3 controller.

By now is working flawlesly wired. I have to figure out now how to connect it by bluetooth.

      thank you!

Please add some info about your setup, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

Looks like you have a 'multi-system' gamepad, which tries to see if it's connected to a PS3 and present itself as a PS3 controller or a PC and disguise itself as a Xbox 360 controller.

For wired Xbox controllers, the xpad driver should be handling the gamepad connection, but we had some reports with similar gamepads (Shanwan PS3 clones) when it doesn't manage to initialize the gamepad correctly and the gamepad doesn't work. Make sure you're using the latest xpad driver (update it from the RetroPie driver package section) and try again.

@fbrier said in Bluetooth PS3 controller connected wirelessly, but no paired devices:

I am guessing what I should see, after pressing the PS3 button, is that all 4 LEDs on the front of the controller will blink, then the first one should become solid, as occurs when paired with an actual PS3 unit.

Pretty much, yes. Can you try resetting the controller ? You are connecting it with the USB cable to the Pi, right ?

You may have posted to the wrong forum - RetroPie is a retro-gaming oriented distribution, based on Raspberry Pi OS (and for the moment it's not supported on the RPI OS 'bullseye' release).

If your PS3 controller is already working, then probably you'd have to look into how the program used to read the inputs from it works with your telescope controls (connected via GPIO perhaps?). It may be that it's no longer functioning with 'bullseye' for various reasons, but without details on how this program works, it's just a guessing game trying to diagnose the issue.

Error messages received: no error, just not works

How exactly did you test this ? Did you start lr-ppsspp with only the PS3 controller(s) connected ? Are the Dragonrise controllers still present when you did the testing ?
Please post a verbose log from starting a game with lr-ppsspp, on pastebin.com.

      I used this note https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/15577/ppsspp-controller-setup-guide-for-when-nothing-else-works

That doesn't apply to the libretro core, any gamecontrollerdb related configurations apply only to the standalone emulator.

What’s the correct way to do this now? (The documentation says it’s no longer relevant and needs to be updated -hence my question)

Which part is marked no longer relevant ?

I’ve tried 6axis, sonyhid, ps3 controller with official, gasia, etc. But I’m lost.

If you want to use the controller via Bluetooth, you'll have to pair it via the Bluetooth menu - as detailed in the Docs.

You can also install it manually from the drivers section in RetroPie-Setup.

Ok, so I need customhisony and sixaxis (with third party support enabled) both active and installed, right?

      Hello,

      I don't have a PS3.

What PC program do I use to test the controller?

The controller does not have a switch option but it can be reset, after connecting it to the PC and testing it, I try to reset the controller.

If after doing a reset, it still does not work, I will try the option to reinstall xpad.

      Thank you.

going off on tangents here, but: RetroPie -> Run Command Configuration -> set Joy2Key version to udev (instead of sdl) seems to have fixed the issue with the config menus not responding to controllers in the latest RetroPie update, although the pop up option to edit emulator configs no longer seems to show up during game loading
PPPS: Re-enablng the launch menu from the same area will fix that last part.

      @mitu
I had a pretty bad go of it with this controller. I moved to the ps3controller driver and I did not get that to work per the docs. I tried to sort out which clone I may have, using lsusb, evtest, and dmesg but none gave me any indication other than Sony. So, I tried them all-- Official Sony, shanwan, and gasia. Although I appreciate the info to get additional bluetooth debugging, that project is "crossing the line" with regard to the time I am willing to invest.

Perhaps to make you laugh a bit-- I used retropie for several years with a Logitech F710 controller and an Intellivision Flashback controller. The F710 was getting worn out so I bought another one. It worked terrible! While the new F710 connected no problem, it was very clunky in terms of usability--buttons didn't work quite right, sometimes the control is sticky. Odd! Years ago I had a PS3 and I remember the controller fondly so I thought, I'll try one of those. Needless to say, instead of playing games I'm troubleshooting why this apparently poorly made clone isn't connecting. While the "thrill of the hunt" for the solution to the problem was fun, I'm done.

So, I'm not quite sure which controller I will try next, but the PS3 dualshock clone just found its way to my electronics-recycling box while I sort out my next step.

Yeh, there's no chance of that.

I made a fresh install of RetroPie on a new card and installed 1 PS game on it. Without going into any drivers or any configs other than to configure the button presses on the PS controller at system startup, the controller worked perfectly in game.

This confirms that there is a config somewhere on the other card that is preventing the PS controller from working in PSX games. I just have to find it now.
