@lostless Hi never tested SRM write by killing specifc emulator IP with all emulators.
I think it has something to do which emulator you are using.
In first instance I try to use siglevel 15 to terminate emu process and this should write SRM files, because this is a prober termination of process. If the emulator is still active after 2 or 3 seconds I try to kill with siglevel 9 and this is a hard breakup and it's very unlikely that a save state is ever written due this signal level.

Well, after a little more googling, turns out it is the game. If anyone is getting this message playing Suikoden, so far the only fix is save->delete the memory card->repeat. There is no loading from the memory card.

Still looking for another fix, but so far, doesn't look like there is one.

      Hi @simonster

Yes, I'm using select + start to return to EmulationStation then shutting down cleanly before switching the power off.

If I save my progress in-game and then go back to the game's start menu (without stopping the emulator, just the game/level) then the "memory card" is blank and I can't load what I just saved.

Is there any way of digging deeper to find out what's going on?

I got it! Here is the link that gave me the clue https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroPie/comments/3dyki2/changing_the_location_of_savefile_directory_and/

went into the retroarch configuration gui and set the save file and save state directories to /home/pi/RetroPie/roms

Can you explain the exact path you took to set the saves? I can't seem to find it. I will be grateful for any help you can provide.
