      @superknight1718 Please don't bump old topics, open a new one and provide the info asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. If you're trying to install on the new Raspberry Pi OS release (bullseye), then there's no need for a new topic - RetroPie does not support it yet.

      @norbit911 Why do it backwards ? You can start the Desktop from EmulationStation, so leave EmulationStation running by default. If you wish to run the desktop also when exiting EmulationStation, modify the autostart.sh file and run the desktop startup command after the emulationstation line.

      Thanks again, @mitu!

      @mitu said in update Retropie 4.6 or Raspbian (old) image:

      I'm not sure why you'd want to downgrade to 4.6 is you already have a 4.7 system (even if on Stretch) ? If the upgrade that broke your install is from the Raspbian updates, then I don't see why the RetroPie version would make a difference.

      The reasons are complex, as the upgrade to 4.7 both introduced and removed some bug symptoms I was trying to debug on something else I am working on, and others report on RPi3 B+ stretch and RetroPie 4.6. And now I’m back to v4.4 from backup on the same SD card. I’d like to get back to the v4.6 state everything was in... ;-)

      I don’t know for certain if the OS upgrade that broke other things came from “apt-get -y dist-upgrade” in the RetroPie upgrade script, or if I ran an upgrade my self.

      Anyways, I guess I have to accept my losses, and let this be yet another life lesson on taking an image backup before making bigger changes. Think I got a little carried away in debugging mode... ;-)

      This is not guaranteed to work, since some of the emulators have been updated and - as a consequence - some of the scripts in RetroPie have been updated to support it.

      Ok now I think I understand better. The complete v4.6 “state” was lost with the removal of the binaries, and is not maintained with information about commit history for external and other source files to compile from the 4.6 install script?

      I guess I will use this opportunity to upgrade to buster and RetroPie 4.7 on this RPi3 B+.
      This day would’ve come eventually, anyways, and it worked like a charm on my RPi4.

      Thanks for a great product and the support!

      I'm going to lock this topic, since clearly it's no longer relevant, given the other set of Audio issues appearing after the Dec. 2020 updates in Raspberry Pi OS.

      @mitu PING google.com (8.7.198.46) 56(84) bytes of data.

      That's not saying much - do you get a reply back ? Is the connection working ? Can you install a simple package via apt get ?

      if it's screensaver / screenblanking shouldn't it happen when other screens are attached as well ? the settings about it do not change when switching screens so in theory he should have the issue on every screen attached then

      This is how I fixed laggy N64 performance on my 4K tv:

      hit F4
      cd /boot
      sudo vi config.txt

      in config.txt, add the following to force 1080p:

      hdmi_group=2
      hdmi_mode=82

      [hdmi:0]
      hdmi_max_pixel_freq=200000000

      [hdmi:1]
      hdmi_max_pixel_freq=200000000

      You're using an unsupported installation method, that's why you're having problems. I guess you've been installing based on a certain outdated and wrong youtube video.

      It works!
      TBH this project required a little more than that. Had to uncomment a line in a config file to make the screen come to life. Had to change default keyboard layout (I'm using US keyboard, couldn't type "|"). Had to localize system. Had to install gamepad driver and configure input. Mount system on my network. And of course install a romset in the proper directory. Still... WORTH IT.

      Thanks for your help.

      Ok. Thanks for your quick answer. I understand that my applications, parameters, etc. will be kept and I'll be able to use Retropie «as an application » (quotes mean I know it's slightly different from a usual application), along with other uses.

      Hi,

      this is what I've done over Raspbian

      git clone --branch fkms_rpi4 --depth=1 --single-branch https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup.git
      cd RetroPie-Setup
      sudo ./retropie_setup.sh
      Perform basic install
      After Installation, exit and to start Emulationstation

      Note that if you installed the Desktop version of Raspbian you can't launch Emulationstation from it. You have to quit the desktop or set your pi to start under console instead of GUI ( you can set this from raspi-config )
