If the heating is still present if you exit EmulationStation, then the problem is somewhere else - just exit EmulationStation and leave the system to run for a while.

Is the problem with the theme? Or because I'm using Retropie 4.3?

I don't think the version has any influence, but why use such an old version ? Do you have anything running in the background besides EmulationStation (music scripts, input handling scripts) ?

Did you do any soldering/modifications on the Pi ?

Let's try to test the stable versions of pcsx rearmed(r23) .
You have to modify the pcsx-rearmed.sh

      Run from terminal :

      sudo nano ~/RetroPie-Setup/scriptmodules/emulators/pcsx-rearmed.sh

      and modify the line

      rp_module_repo="git https://github.com/notaz/pcsx_rearmed.git master"

      to be

      rp_module_repo="git https://github.com/notaz/pcsx_rearmed.git r23"

To save the settings press ctrl+O and ctrl+X.

@simpleethat thanks for the info. Yeah, they are both 16x9, 1080 is 1920x1080 and 720p is 1366x768. I think everything is set to 1920x1080 on my pi currently. Hoping to find out if I have to change any settings to step down to 1366x768 (720p) for proper framing?

@77claws Have you tried configuring the sound output from the Audio menu in RetroPie ? Choose the Headphones jack as the default sound output and it should route all audio over the 3.5mm jack.

@Faye alright you are using Raspbian/ Debian Jessie. Jessie is the older version as everyone stated. You want to Stretch and that will mean you need to start from scratch with new image. That is no problem at all and good way to learn :) .

BEFORE you start with fresh image i'd highly suggest you copy to your computer the roms, bios, configs folders connecting through your computers network. Now you said wifi isn't connected?

This video below by ETA Prime will walk you through the whole setup of a fresh install of RetroPie. But skip to 6:13 mark in the video there he shows how to setup wifi on the Pi.

Setup your wifi when done back out to the selection screen click '' show my ip '' write down the ip address. And now go to your computer and go to file explorer. Find and click network and give it few secs to show up '' RETROPIE '' .

Now if you don't see RETROPIE when you click network this is where the ip address comes into play. At 7:31 of the video where he puts RETROPIE in you replace that with your ip address you grabbed from the Pi.

Click Retropie and now copy to your computer roms, bios, configs folders.

Once you have copied the folders i asked you to copy from the Retropie image you are using now.

You will now have to get erase the RetroPie image you have now in order to install the new RetroPie image. Follow this video on how to do so.

After you have erased your micro sd card you will need to download a image here https://retropie.org.uk/download/.

Now watch that first video from start to finish and everything should be good.

Sorry if this makes no sense. I'm just trying to help.

Hey @nestor1924 , I’m not sure if you noticed, but it’s “scraper” not “scrapper”. These helpful little apps “scrape” the internet for images/video/metadata. I know, is seems like scrap-booking, pulling all of the media together, but I thought you might appreciate the difference, not that it really matters. I guess it’s a pet peeve of mine which is obviously my problem, not yours. Anyway, it might help doing research too, to avoid misspellings in a search.

it is my understanding that lr_stalla doesn't support paddles, so I don't know how well it handles paddle games with more than 2 players.

try to install the stand-alone stella

You can also get the 2600-dapter D9 and use real Atari paddles

Have a small update. I have verified that HDMI output works. Something is going on with how the LCD screen on my Freeplay Zero handles the resolution of the emulator. I wanted to see if I could change it in the emulator, but there are no options for resolution. :/

I had a bit of the same issue.
If i understand correctly, then when you press the "escape" key on keyboard the menu pops up.
What i did, i assigned in the controller setup a unused key, like the right thumbs key for example. I used the LR3 button to let it assign. In my case it made the "LR3 \XAC" key.
I saved the setting to global.
      edited the file " /opt/retropie/configs/psx/pcsx/pcsc.cfg"
Changed the line "bind \xAC = LR3" to "bind \xAC = Enter Menu"
Saved file restart game. Then pressing the Right thumb opened the menu.

@jrpohlman39 good news... I had the exact same problem a while ago with Robotron. Please see the discussion here:
You can map this in mame menu. Within the game it can be accessed via keyboard by pressing TAB key. You can map player 2 joystick to player 1 inputs.

Even better: with the new and very cool mame2003-plus-libretro emulator there is a core option implemented for this. Once set, it enables this control scheme for all dual joystick games. See this github issue 278 and github issue 216

There is a dedicated thread in this forum for mame2003-plus here

Just to give this thread and all you guys some closure, I have not experienced any slowdown on PS1 games since installing Retropie 4.4 from scratch. Perhaps it's the new version, perhaps it was some tinkering I had done and that has now been erased. I did notice that PS1 games tend to slow down on my Pi2 when enabling enhanced resolution, either with or without the speed hack. I have not yet tampered with the overclock settings and I'm not sure if I should, since it's a Pi2... Otherwise I'll simply stick with the bilinear filtering option, which slightly improves graphics, and wait for the Pi4.

Learn how to use SFTP or Samba-Shares.
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Transferring-Roms/#sftp
https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Transferring-Roms/#samba-shares If using SFTP, go to /opt/retropie/configs/all/atari5200/retroarch.cfg, or if using Samba-Shares, go to configs/all/atari5200/retroarch.cfg. Add core_options_path = "/opt/retropie/configs/atari5200/retroarch-core-options.cfg" to the retroarch.cfg above the #include "/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg" line.
