rpi-update creates a backup, but you'll need a Linux system to read and restore it - see https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update/issues/273.

Okay, this is resolved now. Previously I had updated xpad from Source, this time I removed it entirely and then installed it from Source. This worked.

I would think it would be fine as the firmware is stored on the SD Card itself
