From the manual from the person that built the pie for me:

"Both items are equally as important to back up. The SD card contains the “system” and the hard drive contains the “games.”"

@chaalsbawkley Are you trying to save everything or just your ROMs? Im used to Lakka OS but I do keep a copy of my settings and files so I can transfer them easily. Especially thumbnails, they take forever to download if you have a a bunch of roms and systems.

Maybe not all of your configs will be transfer neatly.

@lilejustin i expect your old pi3 was a model b. do you mean you now have the pi 3 model b+? that could require a firmware upgrade that your old image may not have had. i suggest you start again: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/

you could try and harvest the old games and settings from your old sd card via an sd card reader and an OS that can read the ext4 partition, but IMO this is ultimately more trouble than just starting over.

@sebar said in SD card not booting in Zero W, in 3B it does:

Why insist on this old System? It contains tweaks, which I am not able to reproduce.

We don't support 3rd party systems, we don't know how they've been configured and set-up.
Your image has a special kernel, which might as well not work on a Pi 0 if it was optimized for the Pi3 CPU.

Man, i love the concept. I'd like to have his Theme, too.

      Try this.

It's similar, but I don't think it's the right one. You can see the graphic for Favorites is different. (The one in the NFC video has a Donkey Kong Country font for Favorites, whereas the github screenshot shows a Zelda type of graphic for favorites.) I installed your recommended theme, but it appear to be totally broken for me. (This may be due to my 4:3 screen. About to test on widescreen setup.)

The part of the theme that grabbed my attention was the CRT tv image in the game list. My OrangePi has a similar kind of theme and I like it very much.

EDIT - YEah, it's definitely not the same. I got it running properly and can see for sure. The System list is very similar, but the game lists are completely different. Thanks for trying, @mitu

@rseod Exit Emulationstation (either press F4 on the keyboard or use the menu to exit) and look at the message shown on the screen - it should show how much disc space you have available (%). If your free disc space is less than 5%, then you might have a problem and you need to free up some space.

      ok based on this schematics
      https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/schematics/rpi_SCH_3bplus_1p0_reduced.pdf

      i have found the culprit.

U8 chip leg 8 providing 3v3 volts to the board.
      this ic is blown.

      and if you check
      STATUS
      "ACT" LED
      or
STATUS_LED_G in shematics you will se it needs 3v3 and comes from 3v3 line.
since 3v3 is blown or low voltage it will not boot.

      check u11 pin5

The disk I plan on leaving attached. I'll look into options for mount; is option "nofail" supposed to mean that it will give up trying to mount if it is non-available?

      systemd-analyze blame
      the top four are nmbd.service 10.8s and hciuart.service 6.4s
      then raspi-config.service 1.3s and smbd.service 1s

one is the net bios name server i was pretty sure I dont use that so i disabled it with
      sudo systemctl stop nmbd
      sudo systemctl disable nmbd

I do use bluetooth, It seems like it is unusually slow. Reading dmesg:
uart-pl011 3f201000.serial: no DMA platform data
      brcmfmac: power management disabled
and brcmfmac: brcmf_c_preinit_dcmds; look like firmware warnings

raspi-config is probably nominal, though I don't know what it is calling or doing at startup.

      I use samba smbd.service.

Pi Model or other hardware: pi3+ A

Phone chargers do not supply enough stable current to power a Pi. You need to get a dedicated PSU designed for the Pi.

The same also applies for hard drives. You will never get what the actual size is quoted due to filesystem overheads and lose even more space depending what filesystem you format them to. Some take more space than others, some are very efficient filesystems, some are not

@mitu Certainly noted. I honestly never really drew a distinction between both sets of info. I just always assumed one was as good as the other. As I said, I'll definitely keep it in mind and use the pretty docs page for future reference.

@bulletbutter no, but you could copy the relevant config files/directories over, with much the same effect. it depends what kind of things you've configured.

@collcroc123 the systems don't appear in emulation station until you put ROMs the their folders

Not sure why it's booting you to the command line...
