What's in the boot partition of the SDcard ? It seems only config.txt is being read and the other files are either missing or corrupted - including the firmware files needed to start the boot. Did you get any errors during the update ?

You can copy over the files from a good known boot partition, but they'll have to match the kernel you have installed. You can save your sdcard as an .img file, then re-install RetroPie and do an update again. Save the boot partition contents, restore your initial image and copy over the saved file from the correct boot partition.

@lavalamplighter said in RetroPie crashes after attempted update:

preconfigured game box several years ago.

It is not practical to troubleshoot a system that neither you nor we have any idea how is configured. For this reason, third-party builds are not supported in any capacity.

      Start here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation

I suggest you to backup if able your existing roms, and then install the current latest official image for your hardware from the website at https://retropie.org.uk/download. After the new version is installed, you can restore the backed-up roms to it.

@lister-of-smeg I was halfway through another process on resolving the issue when I saw this post, so I didn't get a chance to try it myself. I appreciate your help and the knowledge you shared though!

This whole mess was a lesson learned for me, so I'm on the same page with backing files up now. Copying that RetroPie-Setup folder was my first priority before running git reset --hard. Thankfully, it doesn't seem like anything broke.

@Unnamedium You can the latest image, just back-up your existing image and/or ROM folders just in-case.

The under-voltage notification is a flash sign appearing at the top of the screen.

Did you use the Raspbian Lite or the desktop image to install ? Is there any reason you're not using the RetroPie provided image on the site ?

@cowpuncher said in No video after update:

Related question: For the updates, when prompted "Updated underlying kernel, OS, etc" - Why does that update point to the kernel that kills the HDMI video out? Anybody else who updates their system and chooses to updated the underlying kernel/OS is going to run into the same problem. Just wondering why nobody's changed that to point back to the last kernel that doesn't kill the video.

The OS updates are not distributed by RetroPie, but are coming straight from upstream Raspbian distribution. If you have a video initialisation issue with a certain update, most likely is because of a firmware update.
Try telling the boot loader/firmware what resolution do you need by modifying the config.txt file and tweaking the video resolution parameters - see https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/hdmi-config.md.

What version of the Raspbian kernel are you using ? Can you run uname -a from a terminal and post the output ?

@avengerfishing Use the RetroPie-Setup script and reset your controllers - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/EmulationStation/#controller-configs. Restart and then try to map your gamepad in Emulationstation.

How did you do the update ? Have you updated all packages or picked some of them and updated ? As @TheDataCereal said, ES seems so be missing so you should re-install it from the setup script.
