@chaoseffect I think I got it, Win32DiskImager says something about formatting the E: drive after it writes, this time I selected nothing and put the SD card in the Pi4. Everything boots up as expected. I will use this new SDcard for a while to make sure everything is good.

@retrus You may use rpi-clone to clone your card to another, smaller one, and then run the backup on Windows.

Thanks for advice. I bought 2TB ssd :)

Win32DiskImager - Doesn’t work. I create the image and try to mount it to make sure it works and Windows tells me it's corrupted. This happens over and over again.

This is all you needed to do, it did work, you just can't mount it under Windows.

      @drb

I created an account to say thanks and to also say I had better luck using "Rufus" to perform the iso to usb step.

That ISO to USB tool just didn't want to work for me.

Gparted was straight forward and I was able to resize my partition of my img so it would fit on another card.

      Thanks again!!!

@mitu OK, strange, but I tried on a different laptop and it works fine. Made the backup. The other sd card backed up just fine on the laptop that this sd card would not. I'm not sure what the issue is, but it is done ... both sd cards backed up. Thanks again!

I found the issue was with my USB to SD adapter. The image did contain partitions and windows detected a new USB storage device, halting the write operation. I had no issue when writing to SD on my laptop using a standard SD slot. Image is clean, well configured right out of the gate.

No I'm still using a normal pi3 although I am considering getting the 3b+. Im starting to believe that it's the actual image at fault as wrote a new official image to this card and other cards I have without issues.
The strange thing is that win32 said it was read and completed fine. But now my backed up image seems to be 'broken' and unbootable when written to cards.
      Any ideas?

@edmaul69 I´m pretty sure, I bought it at a large store, and when I record the retropie official image on it it works like a charm. Guess I´ll manually do the work then :) thank you for your reply my friend, wish you a nice week :)

      ?

To create backups for my PI I use Win32 disk imager as I already had it installed from when setting up Retropie on to my SD card.

There are some useful YouTube videos on to how to use the tool but effectively it's just the reverse process of how you got the image of retropie on the SD card but now you are copying an image off and storing it on a PC.

Is the micro SD card in a "normal"SD holder? Maybe write protection is on....

I have a class 10 16Gb Sandisk and it worked straight away.

@rbaker said in Win 32 Disk Imager backup!:

@thrussmeister It's the full card so when you do it, make sure that you have enough space on your hard drive....I didn't! I needed to find 30GB of space to save the image.

Assuming your SD card isn't actually full, and assuming you have enough space to temporarily store the full image, it should compress very nicely for storage.
