Several Problems on Raspberrypi3
-
Everytime i quit a game (Select - Start) and return to the retropie interface the whole RaspberryPi freezes and i have no option to power off.
Lightning bolt keeps appearing top right corner but the power coming in seems sufficent.
Controller needs to be mapped everytime i restart. Ps3 controllers dont map properly, either do xbox controllers. Only the (Usb gamepads) seem to work with no issues.
Kind of looking for a quick fix maybe to restart retropie to default settings..
-
@epd If you get a lightening bolt, the power is not sufficient. Also - please do not post a support request without first reading and following the advice in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

I have a feeling that your first two problems are related; if that lightning bolt keeps appearing, then the problem points to your power supply. If you have another 2.5 amp AC adapter with a micro USB plug, try that and see if the bolt still appears.
As for the controllers not mapping correctly, what emulators and games did you test this with? A SNES game like Super Mario World would be a good candidate for testing.

I did read the advice on power which is why im trying in here
(UK 3 pin power supply with Output : 5V DC 3A) thats my power cable, would it matter if i have 4 plugs running in the same double sockets?
It's when i try and map the ps3 conroller, its hectic.. pressing up on the dpad registers to (axis) and pressing start doesnt assign to anything, meaning i cant exit games with it if theres no start button. I tried 2 ps3 controllers and they have issues. I mainly use retropie for ps1 and n64 so the usb snes gamepad that works fine doesnt have enough buttons.
-
@Eldrethor A while ago I upped the number to boost the hdmi signal in the config file on the sd card. Maybe thats causing the bolt?
-
@epd Make sure your USB cable is ok - some are too thin and cannot provide enough power. Try another PSU also in case it's faulty/bad.
-
Ok yeah the wire is pretty thin, I suppose i cant go wrong with this official power adapter? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CO1HZJ6/ref=twister_B01CO1LNTE?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

Could it be that you're trying PS3/Xbox controller plugged on USB ?
The controller battery charging could explain the power issue, as well as a self-powered USB hard drive.
3A should be far enough to power a RPi3 (it's what I have on mine) -

@Sano
Thats what i thought but even with the snes usb game pad the lightning bolt is still, more or less constantly there. Would it matter that there are 4 other plugs using power from the wall socket?Still cant exit games without everything freezing either..
-
@epd It's possible that if other appliances are drawing power from the 4 socket powerstrip then it would cause the power to the Pi to drop. These things have a limited amount of Amps they can carry. I think it's a combination of a shitty plug/cable and the fact it is plugged into a multi-socket adapter. I don't think the issue is with your peripherals.
-
@epd it's not to do with the sockets. It's likely the thin USB cable then. Too much resistance. The official PSU works well.
resolve the power issue first, as freezing etc can be related.
-
Cheers, just bought the official RaspberryPi adapter. Hoping it sorts all the problems!

So i got the offical power cable, the lightning bolt has gone and mapping the ps3 controller seems to be fine.
Yet it asks to map the ps3 controller everytime i restart. Also when playing games, pressing select and start to exit still freezes retropie and i have no other option to pull the power out and restart..I thought the power cable would have solved all of this but it seems there is an underlying problem

Hi @epd
Do you shutdown the Pi properly (i.e. from within the start menu in EmulationStation)? It sounds like a config not being saved.
-
Yes i shutdown system from emulation station...the thing is everytime i play a game, when i have to exit (Select - Start) everything freezes. Thats the main problem
-
Very odd, I would suggest trying a fresh installation.
-
I got the sdcard with retropie already installed. Do i just format my sd card? Is emulation station installed with retropie too? I'll leave it 24 hours incase someone knows a quick fix

@epd 3rd party images are not supported (we have no idea how they are modified) - please write the official image and go from there. instructions are on the site.

Are you waiting until after Emulation station appears to turn on your bluetooth controller, or is it registering bluetooth after ES starts? if ES doesnt see a controller on startup, it asks to register one. If your controller is taking too long to connect, this will appear. Just quickly hit the circle button to skip it and see if your controller functions properly. If so, turn on your controller at the same time you start your pi.
