Using symbolic links in the Arcade folder?
-
So I have put together filtered sets for both AdvMAME 3.4 and MAME2003 on my Retropie. I would like to leave them there because I like having them as an archive, but I was thinking I would like to use the Arcade directory (which I am not using at all right now) as a sort of bookmark section, for the games I play a lot.
I could dupe the roms I want into those subdirectories, but that's not very efficient, is it? Would it be possible to make symbolic links (shortcuts) in the appropriate subdirectories instead and have those work?

Turns out the answer to this question is yes, it seems to work fine. Of course as with any usage of Arcade you do have to ensure you have the roms launching the right emulator, and if you are going to mix MAME roms be careful when you make links so you don't accidentally link to the wrong set (like I did :)).
(And they don't have to be in the appropriate subs; in fact unless you want to be really organized and don't mind the extra drill-down you probably just want them in arcade/.)
So this changes the question a little: is there any systemic reason I SHOULDN'T be doing this?

Apart from the fact that they then appear in both menus (which is what you are aiming for anyway), it should be fine. Also, don't forget if the rom requires a parent or bios set (like the Neo Geo stuff), you will need to symlink these files too.
