How to use cheats on N64 in RetroPie?

Was just trying to unlock all characters in Smash Bros real quick and it turned into a rest-of-the-afternoon ordeal, at the end of which, still nothing. I tried updating all installed packages, nothing. The game starts, it seems to run OK, but there are no menus to adjust settings or add cheats no matter what button combos I tried. I even tried to configure input hotkeys on RetroArch settings accessed from EmulationStation and the button combo I chose does nothing.

I've been trying to follow these directions here but what it says about the select+x button combo is obviously wrong.

BTW, the controllers I'm using are XBOX 360 Wireless controllers, connected to my Raspberry PI 3 with an XBOX 360 Wireless USB Receiver device. I also tried a USB keyboard. Additionally, I have an "Xbox 360 Chatpad" I've ordered being shipped right now, which is apparently a little keyboard you attach to the bottom of one of your controllers in order to type stuff. I hope it works on RetroPie!

Mupen64plus is not a libretro emulator and therefore the select+x combo won't work. Apparently mupen64plus does support cheats, but it is quite involved and uses the command line to set the cheats. @simonster Yikes, that is awful. I see how you'd do it if you were running mupen64plus from the command line, but how do I get RetroPie to do it? Can I change it by editing files from my windows PC over the network via Samba or will I need to go into it with a USB keyboard at the command line on the actual PI?

There are a few things about RetroPie that just baffle me. Like why on Earth isn't there a basic web browser and media player available in EmulationStation? I mean, modern game consoles have those and there are open source ones that could be used. It should be trivial to just plop one on there, shouldn't it? It seems bizarre that I can't just bring up YouTube real quick without switching to another device.

Both Pixel-Desktop environment and Kodi are launchable from the Emustation and via Kodi Youtube is available.
Pixel can be enabled via Retropie-Setup - > Configuration Tools - > Raspian tools and Kodi can be installed from the optional packages menu.

In response to how to do mupen64 plus you could probably change the default emulator for n64 to libretro mupen64plus and test that other than that you would need to manually launch from the command line as changing anything with the file would have no effect on wether cheats load or not.

To do it via Emulationstation is something the devs would have to do, and you could try to create a thread for it in Ideas and Development.

@Twitch0815 Yip. I also installed Chromium browser as its' own system so I can launch that straight from the ES menu when I need to.

I'm not entirely sure what I should be asking for in this Ideas & Development thread you suggested making. Can you clear up what you had in mind there?
