      I've used MAME for a long time on the Mac and have a general idea about how it works. I installed RetroPie and have all the MAME 0.37b5 ROMS in the Arcade/MAME2003 folder and running lr-mame 2003. Choosing a ROM will get it to run, but the TAB key doesn't bring up the menu and it's a ton of guess work to get any keys to actually work.

      I am running RetroPie 4.2 from a stock download from retropie.org.uk, running on a Raspberry Pi 3B.

      After reading this forum and doing some research I found several possibilities but none yielded anything fruitful:

      • The folder /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2003/cfg/ is empty (i.e. there is no default.cfg file or any other file there)

      • I haven't done anything with retroarch at all, and so no surprise the the folder /opt/retropie/configs/arcade does have a file retroarch.cfg, but it has two commented lines and the only active line is:
        input_remapping_directory = "/opt/retropie/configs/arcade"

      Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

          mame2003 uses the 0.78 set. i suspect you're actually running lr-imame4all, which has known issues with the tab key.

            @dankcushions Whoops you are correct. I'm using lr-imame4all emulator. I do indeed have the 0.37b5 mame ROMset. I tried using the mame4all emulator but when I tried to play a game I was told I had missing ROMs, while these ROMs loaded with the lr-imame4all that comes stock with the retropie 4.2 install. Perhaps you have some recommendations? Thanks!

              that's strange, as both lr-imame4all and mame4all use the 037b5 romset and should be identical in this regard, but anyway doesn't really matter because...

              yep! use 0.78 with the lr-mame2003 emulator, which also comes installed as stock :) the tab key works fine here.

                  @edmaul69 If you haven't already, try removing:

                  /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/cfg/default.cfg
                  Or if you're using the 'arcade' folder:

                  /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2003/cfg/default.cfg

                      @edmaul69 No prob. It does wipe the saved keymap settings default used by all games, but not for INDIVIDUAL games, so there is rarely anything that is lost here. However, it also fixes this odd problem which seems to happen when I upgrade or start a new image. I don't know why.
