I believe 4.2 is the latest version... does this now install fine on the Zero W?

I've been wondering about this also. What exactly is the difference between the pi zero and regular 2/3 image? Is it mostly just emulator choice and some defaults in the main config file like memory split? Or are there some low level tweaks that actually make it run better?

@Capeman different defaults, and zero/rpi1 images built for armv6, whilst rpi2/rpi3 images built for armv7 with neon optimisations.

So does 4.2 work ok with the Zero W, or do I need to patch it?

@jay81uk The problem with the Pi0 image not working with the Pi0W was fixed within a day or two of the Pi0ws release as far as I can remember.
