Is there a way to get FM sound from any SMS emulator on SMS games? I know Phantasy Star and Double Dragon have FM sound and I was hoping to be able to get that through Retropie.

Yes, you have to change the default MS emulator from lr-picodrive to lr-genesis-plus-gx, then switch FM sound ON in the core options via Retroarch menu (Select+X).
The caveat is that lr-genesis-plus-gx doesn't emulate Master System as good as the Picodrive because it's optimised to run Genesis/MD first. As a consequence, you will notice that scrolling isn't as smooth and the image a little stretched and blurry. I wish Picodrive had the FM option, but it is what it is, and I still stick with it.

@fabio78 Thanks! I forgot that R-Type had FM sound as well. I'm gonna have a go at it later tonight.
