MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!
Notes:
-
We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.
-
There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.
These "rules" are constantly being improved!

I'm usually too busy to play any of these game long enough to get a really good high score but here's my thoughts on these:
Chequered Flag looks okay but the way the camera turns around with the car like that gives me a headache. Plus I'll probably be disappointed by it because it's not Spy Hunter (which isn't this game's fault, it's just how I am).
Power Instinct 2 reminds me of a Street Fighter game. Could be a good PvP game but might not be good for MAME ROW. I didn't get to test it on an actually RPi but maybe someone should to make sure it runs okay.
I think Rezon would be the best fit and it kind of reminds me of a mix of R-Type and Gate of Thunder (TG-CD). I feel that shmup's make good additions to the MAME ROW.
-
Agree, my favorite in this row is also Rezon.

random.org loves shoot'em ups. :-)

I have similar feelings about Rezon and it not being R-Type Leo

@meleu If only random.org loved Puzzle Bobble...
Y'all wouldn't stand a chance
-
@lilbud hmmm... it sounds like a challenge... I'll check the arcade version of Puzzle Bobble and post my score when I have a chance. :-)
By the way, would you like to try Seaquest from Atari 2600? Looks like a fun game to play on your radiocade. Me and my friend @cabrunco have a "perpetual" Seaquest tournament. Maybe you can join us. :-)
-
@meleu I've heard of seaQuest, never played it.
I'm away from my cabinet until next Monday, so no games or MAME until then
-
The car one seems fun.
-
Gave these a quick try last night.
Chequered Flag looks pretty good but on my cab at least it was really difficult to control. I think it would benefit from an analogue controller, as with a joystick I was all over the place. I'll probably try it again when I have more time to tweak the settings.
Power Instinct 2 is another nice looking game, although not near the standard of Street Fighter 2 that it's obviously ripping off! I was quite pleased to find that the first character I chose (Samurai armour guy) has a fireball special move that's pulled off in exactly the same way as Ryu's fireball in SF2!
I wondered if perhaps all the characters had the same special move, but no, I tried a girl next and it did nothing.
My only real criticism of this one was that it's easy to be hit with a combo where there is nothing you can do about it, but it might need more playing to become used to it.
Rezon is a classic shooter in the R-Type vein, although the firing orbs are a pale imitation of R-Type's 'Force'. It's frustrating to have them firing the wrong direction, then move your ship to realign them, and accidentally crash into an enemy/landscape in the process!
I died within about a minute every time I played it, but of all the games in this week's MAMEROW, this genre is my favourite, so I'm going to vote for Rezon.

IMHO if random.org wants to give another chance for a game that wasn't chosen (didn't win the election), then the game deserves to be in the list. :-)
By the way, I voted for Rezon.

@GtBFilms if you were an youtuber posting arcade game reviews I surely would subscribe your channel and give you a lot of likes. :-)
-
@meleu Yeah, but there are only so many times you can watch Pac Man videos ;)
-
This week's winner is Rezon
-
Has anyone else noticed that the sound in Rezon is really tinny? I'm using lr-mame2003. At first I thought it might be my Pi or the TV I was playing on, but other games sound fine.
-
@obsidianspider Yeah, for a change this week I'm playing on a GPD Q9, so I thought the sound quality was due to that, it sounds jumbled up and corrupt to me. That's the music, the actual sound effects seem fine.
Here's my initial high score attempt, this is a tough game!
29200
-
@GtBFilms if you hold fire button then the side cannons stay in Position. That is a tough game

Damn! I didn't notice it! Will try again right now!
It's hard as Silver Surfer (NES)!
-
OK, I reached the stage 2 but I had to stop. Reason: my right forearm is burning.
My best score: 56800.
-
@meleu 56800? Wow, I thought 32000 was good. I guess I know what I'm doing tonight!
