had gone to thier site to get in contact w/ support about a replacement battrery or a extended one to notice they released FW 4.0 (android using D-Input, Windows using X-Input, macOS and Switch Mode use own modes. )i could never make it work w/ my Wii in that FW an di ended up selling my Retron5 so no need for that there.

before jumpin ship has anyone tested this if it's had any impact in retropie compatibility?

I have both a SNES and NES 8Bitdo controllers, both running firmware 4.0 and they work no problem with RetroPie.

I use Start+R to connect to retropie and Start+Y for connection to my switch. Not sure what the modes are actually called.
