I am working on setting up all of the button mapping on my arcade cabinet build and I am looking for some advice on control mapping.

      My button setup:
Each player has a start, select and coin button. Those are not of any concern right now.

I have a 6 button plus joystick setup for gameplay. I have the typical button layout and mapping.

      Y X R
      B A L

My questions is what your opinion is on mapping controlls for Megadirve/Genesis? The original controller is 3 buttons, A B C. A majority of the games only use 2 buttons and most used B and C. My first thought was to simply change my controller mapping for these systems to be A B C on the bottom row of buttons,

      B A L
      A B C

but when i do this, the first button, typically the main button in most arcade games, is often empty. The 2nd and 3rd buttons are active, with C being the main action button as that was the fist bottom closest to the hand. What are your thoughts on swapping A and C?

      C B A

Thus the main action button would be the button closest to joystick and the B button would stay unchanged?

To follow up on this, what are your thoughts on SNES games? A lot of them use B and Y as the main buttons and A as the third button. This is obviously not the case with all games. What if i were to make this similar to megadrive/genesis and do

      X L R
      Y B A

Now the main three buttons are on the bottom row?

@TMNTturtlguy I don't have a cabinet yet but I've thought about this on and off. I think you have a good compromise there, and swapping A and C might be a good experiment.

This old thread may be helpful:
