(Mainly for those in the U.S)

For those who don't know, net neutrality is the thought that all websites can be accessed equally, no matter what ISP you have. 2 people can have 2 different internet providers and access Twitter the exact same way at the exact same speed.

Now, for a while, this was how the internet was supposed to be forever. These rules were set up by our last president as an attempt to level the playing field across Internet Providers. But now these rules are in danger of disappearing forever. The FCC is attempting to shut these rules down, claiming that they put too much stress on ISPs. (BS)

If these rules pass and become the new law, sites will be forced into a slow lane, (if you want to get on Twitter, you're gonna have to wait.) Or these companies can pay the ISPs to be moved into the fast lane. This is like watching natural selection in process. The smaller sites who can not afford to pay up will be shut out by their competition who can afford to pay.

No one wants this to happen, that is why numerous sites are banding together to bring an end to this. Everyone from Amazon to Reddit will show people what the internet will look like if these rules pass.

I read that streaming services will be throttling bandwidth to get the point across. I wonder if/how they'll let people know why they're doing it. Unfortunately most people are not as tuned in to things like this as nerds on a niche video game forum.

Supporting this is a noble cause, and everyone should of course do it.

However, it is important to remember that none of the big companies that are on "our" side here do this out of the goodness of their heart. They're simply fighting off ISPs so as not to let anybody else into the control-the-net game and, of course, to avoid of having them in position in which they could make them pay for being in the fast lane.

Some of these companies - the most obvious being Google, Facebook, Amazon, Reddit, Netflix (aka "Internet Association") etc only recently lobbied very hard to kill a pro-privacy bill which would require an opt-in from users for these giants to access your history. Hilariously, they used exactly the same arguments ISPs are now using: saying it would "stifle innovation" https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/05/google-and-facebook-lobbyists-try-to-stop-new-online-privacy-protections/

And of course they would do the same if they were to own the cables (which, in the age of gigantic mergers, broadband-baloons and such might just happen one day). Google already did, back in the day: https://www.wired.com/2013/07/google-neutrality/

What attitude? I disagree with your viewpoint, so what? Any view point is welcome as long as its yours?

The OPs subject, no matter how you feel about it is political. There are loads of places on the internet to discuss it. Why here? It is not on topic.

The irony is strong with this one. @Jeff_Birt People here are polite, you aren't weren't.

You could have said: I disagree, bla bla reason reason. And we would have had a proper discussion. You acted like a piss drunk in a bar and the bouncers did their job. Remember why it is called a Gentlemen's club and not Brawler's club.

EDIT : No offence to the Ladies

@lilbud thanks for raising awareness on this. I had no idea tomorrow was such a day - probably because of me being based in Europe.

I think Net Neutrality is good Policy. Policy is related to, but not the same as Politics. I had the chance to work as a professional advocate for Net Neutrality during the last US presidential administration helping the Policy navigate the Politics which was a formative experience for me.

Some may not know that the last administration was not initially backing net neutrality either. Of course, we thought we'd 'won' a few years ago, just to have it open back up as a political issue now. The struggle to have policy be grounded in real life never ends...

Using this site, you can write a comment to the FCC, urging them to keep Net Neutrality.
