Roms stop and red square appears

Playing Tony Hawk 2 on PSX and every time I try to buy stats the screen slowly fades to black and a red square appears in the corner.
This also happens on Tony Hawk 1 when I select the third level.
Any ideas?

looks like the pi is overheating. or it could be a bug is pcsx.

I'm not sure about overheating, it may be the old under voltage icon. What power source do you have?

5v, 3amp supply. Have heatsink on it.
I suspected a glitch but then when it happened on two games I figured that red square must mean something.
