Why is EmulationStation not registering when I press START menu and showing the menu? What can I do?

I updated RetroPie and all of the packages installed to version 4.2.16. When I am in EmulationStation, I press the START button to open the main menu and it didn't respond. Can anyone help with this? I installed and used rpi-update so maybe that got to do with it? Also, since I lost my MicroSD adapter and I only have a SD Card Reader, say "reinstall RetroPie" ONLY if that's the only way to do this and there is no other way.
Pi Model: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B
Power Supply used: CanaKit MicroUSB Charger 5W 2.5A
RetroPie Version Used : Version 4.2.16
Built From: SD Image from RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: Logitech F310 & HP K2500 Wireless Keyboard
Controller used: Logitech F310
How to replicate the problem (Might not happen):

1. Open up terminal.
2. Type in following code:

 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

 sudo rpi-update

 sudo BRANCH=next rpi-update
