This was floated a while back https://blog.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/install-all-themes/ but I believe this is more important than ever.

For someone new to RetroPie who sees a list of 60+ themes available, who wants to try them all to find their favourite/s, it's such a lengthy process to install each one individually.

While I appreciate very few people may want to try every theme, is there any harm in adding some code to allow people the option? What possible issues would it cause? AFAIK installing every theme doesn't slow down a RPi.

Some themes are large and adding all of them can take up a lot of space

Do we know how much space all the themes take up? When installing them there's no size next to their name (although whether this would be possible, I'm not sure).

@robertybob Can you explain why this is "more important than ever"? I Don't get it. Each theme has a preview in the gallery. You can get a fair idea if you might like it or not from there. Why would you want to download every theme and then have to uninstall 50 or more to clear space. I really don't see the logic behind your post / request.

@jonnykesh The gallery just shows 1 or 2 images and it doesn't say what features, or systems, each one supports. Therefore there's no way of knowing, without going to each one's Github repo, whether it's going to support the systems you've got roms for.

@robertybob Yes, that is the nature of the themes. RetroPie is not a retail product. Why should it behave like one?

@robertybob Are you volunteering to compose a "read me / info" page for each theme? If you are that would be a great help I'm sure.

Edit: And maintain it. Things will change quite often in 60 or so themes, all designed by different people. Seems like a thankless / pointless task to me.

I'm not saying it should be like a retail product. What's with the sarky comments?

That is actually a great idea if someone did want to do such a thing.

Although I agree with you. I don't see it as a major issue. Surely the gallery will give you an idea as to the top 3-4 themes you like. Test those, pick your favourite. Done.

@robertybob "snarky"? I'm just disagreeing with you. Is that not allowed?

@jste84 I think you can judge pretty quickly from a few images whether you will stick with a theme or move on. Personally I didn't have to download 60 and then load them all up to see if I liked them or not. Perhaps I am in the minority. I only can give my own opinion.

@jonnykesh Absolutely, I'm the same. I don't mean disrespect to the 50 that I've maybe never given a second glance to, but they are just not for me. I can tell it instantly by looking at the gallery. Everyone will have their own opinion and I appreciate having the choice to browse.

The other problem with a download all theme's for me is that if I click it by accident I'm waiting forever and a day on them all downloading (I have rubbish broadband) My clumsy fingers would rather not have the option.

@jonnykesh That's you though, who's to say others may want the option?

@Jste84 Point taken, but something like that could happen when accidently installing something from source instead of binary, but we still have that option nonetheless.

@jste84 That's the point of RetroPie, as far as I can tell. You can make it whatever you want. Some people want ALL the metadata and stats and info.... I just want a gameslist and a decent image. I have the game, I know what it is about and how may people can play it. I like something simple, others want all the bells and whistles. People are different.

@robertybob I agree I don't see the benefit of update from source for most. I do wonder if perhaps devs use it to check how latest updates imact themes, functions etc.

I have no idea. I don't see the benefit personally but I'm sure someone may be able to advise the purpose of it
