Installation Instructions
(For this you will need a SSH like WinSCP and then go to Preferences > Panels > Show hidden files)
-
Download a video, for example:
Super Metroid.mp4 -
Create a new folder named screensavers in here:
/home/pi/RetroPie
-
Put the video file into your new folder:
/home/pi/RetroPie/screensavers/Super Metroid.mp4
-
Now go to the folder system of the game you want to add:
/home/pi/.emulationstation/gamelists/snes/gamelist.xml
(for this exemple it's Super Metroid so I went to the snes folder) -
Open the gamelist.xml file, you should have something like this:
<gameList> <game> <path>./Super Metroid (Japan, USA) (En,Ja).zip</path> <name>Super Metroid</name> <desc>Super Metroid is a follow-up to Metroid II, and once again features bounty hunter Samus Aran.</desc> <image>~/.emulationstation/downloaded_images/snes/Super Metroid (Japan, USA) (En,Ja)-image.jpg</image> </game> </gameList>
- Add the the line with the path of the video like so:
<video>/home/pi/RetroPie/screensavers/Super Metroid.mp4</video>
<gameList> <game> <path>./Super Metroid (Japan, USA) (En,Ja).zip</path> <name>Super Metroid</name> <desc>Super Metroid is a follow-up to Metroid II, and once again features bounty hunter Samus Aran.</desc> <image>~/.emulationstation/downloaded_images/snes/Super Metroid (Japan, USA) (En,Ja)-image.jpg</image> <video>/home/pi/RetroPie/screensavers/Super Metroid.mp4</video> </game> </gameList>
-
Save and close the gamelist.xml file.
-
Restart System and voilà!

These are frickin awesome! Nice work.
-
Wow! These are great! Wonder if it's possible to only show these in screensaver mode instead of rom video previews.
-
@lilbud Aw thanks, they are not flawless though, I made them in a hurry because I wanted to gift them to a friend of mine.

Well they are about 10x better than something I could have done

Thank you! Well it is possible if you put them as your regular rom video previews, but if you have an other video linked to another rom you will have to delete it, at least that's the way I do it.
-
Great job on these!
-
wow the screensaver are great. Many thanks for your work. How can I integrate this into the latest version of retropie?
-
@cybermen Thanks a lot, I will edit my post and add a "How to" I am taking the Castlevania Screensaver for exemple:
-
Download the video with any "YouTube Downloader" in .mp4 format
-
Put the video into your roms folder: \retropie\roms\nes\Castlevania (NES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4
-
The video file must have exactly the same name as his rom conterpart, for me it's Castlevania (USA).zip so the video file is renamed Castlevania (USA).mp4
-
Go to your RetroPie >> Select the game Castlevania, for the exemple >> Press Select >> Go to Edit this game's metadata
-
Select the Video option and enter the path of the video with your keyboard, it's case sensitive so it must be exactly the same: \home\pi\RetroPie\roms\nes\Castlevania (USA).mp4
-
Press OK, Save and restart Emulationstation
-
-
@Malixx Thank you for the super description and guidance. TOP.
-
Looks good!
Why does it have to have a specific name, isn't it just a screensaver for ES? -
@andershp I don't know for sure, it's the way I found to do it and it works, if you have an easier way to do it please do share it
-
autohot ;)
UPDATE:The last version of ES can handle the video with this little hack is version 2.6.2
For fixing see --> THREAD
@Malixx can you please "translate" Tetris to Тетрис ;)
@andershp I don't know for sure, it's the way I found to do it and it works, if you have an easier way to do it please do share it
Yes that's interesting.... It can be easily done that way, thanks @SuperCatFooz and this thread. I copied all your 14 videos to
/home/pi/RetroPie/screensaver
and added them to retropie gamelist.xml (Path is showen in code block). This will randomly loop-play all these magnificant videos ;)<!-- This is for Screensavers from Metadata without having video metadata available, so copy the whole block to /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/gamelists/retropie/gamelist.xml and enable Video Screensaver / SuperCatFooz and cyperghost --> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #1 - Castlevania (NES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #2 - Crash Bandicoot (PS1) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #3 - Final Fantasy VI (SNES) Screensaver for Retropie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #4 - Kirby's Adventure (NES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #5 - Metal Slug (NeoGeo) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #6 - Pac-Man (NES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #7 - Pokemon (GB) Screensaver for Retropie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #8 - Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Megadrive) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #9 - Super Bomberman (SNES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #10 - Super Mario World (SNES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #11 - Tetris (NES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #12 - The Legend of Zelda (SNES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #13 - Yoshi's Island (SNES) Screensaver for RetroPie.mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #14 - Chrono Trigger (SNES).mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #17 - Breath of Fire III (PS1).mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #18 - Super Metroid (SNES).mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #19 - Megaman X (SNES).mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #20 - Donkey Kong Country (SNES).mp4</video></game> <game><path /><video>~/RetroPie/screensavers/RetroPie Screensaver #21 - XCOM Enemy Unknown (PC).mp4</video></game> <!-- This is for Screensavers from Metadata without having video metadata available, so copy the whole block to /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/gamelists/retropie/gamelist.xml and enable Video Screensaver / SuperCatFooz and cyperghost --> <!-- #15 and #16 are 60seconds clips of NES mini and don't fit in this collection -->
-
@cyperghost Oh yeah this is nice! I will stick with my method for now but I guess this one is better if you have many videos to add at once.
Here you go, I think this is what you wanted: -
Wow. This is fantastic. If you are taking requests I would LOVE to see Final Fantasy 6, Super Metroid, Mega Man and Chrono Trigger. :) Great job!
-
-
I just saw this thread, and these look so clean. Nice work.
-
@supercatfooz I've added a link to this thread and yours in the Useful topics index.
-
@meleu Alright, wonderful! I hope we see more people jump on this animated-screensaver bandwagon.
(I might actually make a couple myself and post them in this thread, just for fun) -
@malixx I don't, and I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I just thought that ES had a "screensaver" folder one could put these into?
