This was recently posted on the WDLabs product page for all Raspberry Pi accessories they make, including the PiDrive...
"TURNING THE PAGE
Raspberry Pi fans: The WDLabs team has learned a great deal from engaging you and designing products for DIY community. We continue to investigate emerging ideas, however, and the time has come for our engineers to explore new areas. The WDLabs products for the Raspberry Pi ecosystem are now available only on a limited basis and will be discontinued. Our understanding of and appreciation for the creative Raspberry Pi community is highly valued by Western Digital and may resurface in the future.
We thank each and every one of you for your support these past three years."
That's too bad. I have a 1TB PiDrive and it's been excellent. Might pick up another for a future project.

Well there goes that project idea.

@lilbud there isnt anything special about a pi drive. An external usb western digital drive is the same thing. The only thing special is the cable.
-
@edmaul69 It uses 550mA, other 2.5 harddisks use the same, the max an USB 2.0 port can use is 500mA. So it is indeed just the same drive just as any other 2.5' drive.
From what I've understood people got problems with external harddisks because of their power supplies, they didn't provide enough juice.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
