MAME ROW #52 - 1st Anniversary Edition - Phoenix

@meleu I looked at the investigation of that bug and it sounds like if you trigger it once you don't want to do it again, as triggering it a second time will reset back to 204,000. Is that right? SO, the trick would be to do it one time, then avoid it after that, so you can improve your score beyond 204k.

http://donhodges.com/phoenix.htmYeah, that's exactly what I read. So my comment still stands: You really only want to trigger this once.
-
@caver01 Seems so... ;)

@meleu This bug is cool ;)
But well we should play with pants off and say if we used that ;)It's a bit unnecessary. Anyone posting a score greater than 200k is using that bug. If saying the contrary he/she is lying! :)
-
@meleu Or is excellent ;)
-
Just for reference:
-
@UDb23 made a cool overlay for Phoenix (and posted about it here). You can install the overlay using the rpie-art tool.
-
the bug to get 200k on the 2nd stage can be learned here:

-
And here is my first score: 219,145 (of course I took advantage of that bug).
-
@meleu Well, it's game over for me. I suck at this game, and I can't bear looking at it. I'll keep it on my cabinet because it is apparently popular, but. . . Ahem. Great Score! WAY TO GO!

@obsidianspider In a way, I am just following his Tip 1:
@lilbud said
Tip 1: Never Play Phoenix
But, didn't I see his name next to the original Phoenix high score? I may take the War Games Joshua/Prof. Falken approach:
-
I was able to get one decent score before smashing my keyboard into a million pieces
-
Lets see here
Ninja Gaiden - Easy
Contra - Easy
Mega Man - No sweat
Phoenix?...throws laptop out window -
@lilbud I know the game is what it is, partly because of historical context, but the whole look-and-feel of the sprites, animation decisions and gameplay is, well, a bit rough around the edges, right? I don't think I am hurting anyone's feelings by saying so, but that is a contributing factor, is it not? When I play it I feel like I am fighting the design limitations more than the game enemies. Does anyone else feel that way?
-
@caver01 yes. I feel like that too.
But [Chinese Sage intonation] when I accept a challenge I try to adapt myself to the challenge, not the opposite.
-
@caver01 It can be summed up like this:
You move too slow, enemies move too fast
-
@caver01 Absolutely. I'll post my highscore anyways, since it won't get any higher: 500
XD
Edit: sorry, I forgot to take a picture. Remind me later ;-)
-
I got 2620. Thanks for selecting this game otherwise I likely wouldn't have played it myself.
I don't fully get all the negative comments about it - I mean, sure, it's not the greatest game ever, but if I had to play it back in the day I can see it being quite popular! I mean, 1980? Impressive.
Keep up the good work here - I'd perhaps like to see scores without the glitch, for a fair comparison:)
-
@lilbud Act like a robot!
-
I don't know what the bug is, but I was rather proud to get 4350 with a lucky game! I'm hoping no bugs were involved
