Testers needed: mame2000 vs mame4all on rPi 0/1
-
As seen in the Arcade docs, mame4all has historically been recommended over lr-mame2000 for low-power systems like the Raspberry Pi 0 and 1. That may change, but to know for sure requires testing.
The primary reason for this recommendation was that mame4all performed better than mame2000. mame2000 also had some functionality issues which made it less attractive. On the other hand, mame2000 benefits from the standardized RetroArch input system and other libretro functionality.
Things are changing! As of October 4, there have been several notable usability and performance improvements to mame2000. The goal has been to make mame2000 as fast and usable as mame4all.
At this point it would be helpful if any RetroPie users with low-powered pi boards would be willing to do "A/B testing" to compare the performance of these two emulators with the same ROMs. If differences are discovered, that will help move mame2000 development forward. If there aren't performance differences, then it may be that mame2000 can become the recommended arcade emulator for low-power devices.
In order to participate in the testing, please rebuild mame2000 from source in order to make sure you have the latest and greatest version.

Alrighty, thanks to Wilstrom on github we have a new issue related to mame 2000 remapping keyboard input and which has implications for the Tab menu: https://github.com/libretro/mame2000-libretro/issues/25#issuecomment-334616188
I hope the issues keep a-coming!

Good news: This issue has now been resolved.

Missed this - See my comment on the PR to enable the drz80 core. It should not be enabled by default and will break many games - this change reverses some of my previous work on the core (It's worth checking git history when changing stuff like this).

Mame 2000 does not seem to save hiscores

@eskodisk Out of curiosity... I was looking through some of the Arcade1up forums. Apparently some of them use Mame2000 (as well as other Mame versions, RetroArch, and remnants of Retropie). Their are problems already identified that may be helpful. High-scores was one of them.
The guy who is leading the 1UP hacking charge has a thread on Reddit, but he doesn't know anything about Retropie, RetroArch, or Libreto, and was asking for help... if anyone wants to help him. ; )
