Wireless controllers that work best?

ps4 dualshock with sony usb dongle, its perfect
-
Those are not bluetooth controllers I take it?
-
the s4 controller is bluetooth but uses a USB dongle to recieve the bluetooth, so the Pi sees it as a hardwired usb controller,
this is the best option for this controller as using the bluetooth on the Pi caused serious heat issues -
Hmmm was not aware that BT on the PI caused heat issues. The controllers are expensive enough not sure I want to spend more on a dongle. Is it one dongle to one controller or does the dongle support multiple controllers?
-
I use Dualshock3 Controllers since Raspberry 1 and had never any heat issues (i dont use fans or something like that).
Work great IMO and with the Raspberry Pi3 i dont even have to use an external BT-Dongle. -
its one dongle to one controller, I hear the ps3 controllers work just as well without the dongle, but i got mine locally, no ps3 were available.
the reason for the heat issue was the ds4drv driver i believe, pretty much the second i installed it i got thermal throttling, and never have had it since a new install. (only during quake 3 without the fan on)

PS3 controllers have been the best for me so far, I’ve had four connected at once, and never seem to have any issues thus far.... (expect a thread soon then!) Connecting is always good, the only problem I’ve ever had is battery running out with no warning, so I keep them charged up!

Seems most of you like the PS3 controllers, i'll try them out. Thanks
-
i'd say ps3's dual shock or six axis but i find ps4's controller to offer a better grip and much, much better dpad. and it's still great for classic ps emulation too.

Am I the only person who gets lag on PS3 controllers? And it's not me just being a geek, Even the wife notices it when she plays Mario where jumps have to be perfectly timed.
I am using the PS3 sixaxis driver or whatever it's called in the add ons bit in retropie, I have heard using the standard BT driver can help but I have yet to try this as I replaced my controllers with hard wired $12 things and they seem to work fine but sitting in front of the telly for hours on end (no matter how nostalgic it is) plays hell with my 42 year old legs ;)

I recently did a pi zero W build with 8bitdo SNES Bluetooth controllers. Controllers worked out of the box after connecting with Bluetooth. They feel like SNES controllers in every sense of the word and really impressed my friends. I would also echo the others who use PS3 controllers if you are emulating N64 or Playstation.

Ideally you want a controller that you can turn on and off without any fuss. With that said, the XBOX 360 controller is a terrible choice since you have to pull the batteries out to truly turn it off.
The PS3 and PS4 controller can be powered off by holding the PS button for 10 seconds.
The 8bitdo controllers all have power off options as well.
The Switch Pro controller has a way to power it off, but it's not intuitive.
I've used all these controllers (I've tried all 8bitdo controllers as well) and I always end up coming back to the PS4 controller since it feels the best IMO. The PS3 controller is also a good choice.

My PS4 controller works perfect with my pi 3! Just took me a while to find out how to work retroarch to change the buttons
-
@blitzgreig with or without the usb dongle?
-
PS3 controllers for sure! No need for dongles or anything.
I do have fake ones so after installing the PS3 driver, I need to install/pair with the Shanwan clone support option.
One more thing, when pairing via USB, my controllers won't stop vibrating... This only happens when connecting them with a Pi. Besides that they work perfectly.

Thanks for the input all!

@spruce_m00se (sorry for late reply) I just use the already installed Bluetooth on the pi and connect it on there it really is so easy to do

GameSir G3s/G4s are the best controllers i have used on my Pi.

@ecks said in Wireless controllers that work best?:
GameSir G3s/G4s are the best controllers i have used on my Pi.
The Gamesir G3s is terrible. Yes the controller feels great but I couldn't get it pair with Bluetooth with D-Input or X-Input and if you use the wireless dongle it randomly disconnects and you either have to unplug the dongle or reset the Pi before you can connect again. Apparently it's a known problem and they offered to send me a G4s instead. I got a refund. 8-bitdon't are releasing a new controller on December 10th, SF30 Pro. This time a decent size with dual analogue sticks. £35 though.

@maxbeanz There is something wrong with your unit then because i use it by the dongle and never had disconnection issues at all with my controllers and i use the G3s and G4s on my unit.
