I was trying to follow these instructions.
      https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/8Bitdo-Controller

I can get my controller searching for a bluetooth device (blinking blue light), and the Bluetooth menu finds it (first as just a MAC address, but on subsequent scans it finds the name "SFC30 Controller" or something like that). However, when I hit to register that device and hit enter on "DisplayYesNo" as the instructions say to, the Pi3 freezes for probably about a minute, definitely long enough for the controller to stop searching for a connection, and then says something like either "Page Timeout" or "Authentication Cancelled"

The controller has the latest (4.01) firmware.

@insidious611 did you turn off/on the 8bitdo hack then try syncing?

It's currently off, which the walkthrough says it should be if I'm on 4.0+ firmware... I could try turning it on, but since the walkthrough says not to repeatedly I'm afraid I'll damage my device...

@insidious611 well it wont damage it. But i would just download an older version of the firmware and try running that.

@insidious611 also remember any time you set it up changing the 8-bitdo hack option and sync, you need to re setup your controller in emulationstation so it correctly installs all the controller configs.
