The best sport game ever is Crash 'n' the Boys: Street Challenge (NES).

Speedball 2 on the Genesis is a nice one.

You can also try Hyper Sports, Track and Field and the like, on the arcade and NES. Not as much about league progressing but still sports related.

I used to play an old game on the DOS called "Face Off!" It is a hockey game with fighting in it. I never watched ice hockey nor do I know much about the rules, but as a kid I recall it being loads of fun.

There was also Kings of the Beach, a volleyball game which also exists for the NES. I can't say if it has aged that well, but it's not very skill based.

          Best of luck.

I remember having lot of fun with Nintendo World cup on GB when I was young.
Part of the Kunio Kun saga (renegade, river city ransom, crash and the boys, ...), it's a really fun and unrealistic soccer game :)

I do know about Kings of the Beach, I played the DOS version back in the day, totally forgot about that one! It was loads of fun indeed, one of the very few sportsgames I ever liked. Thanks a lot for the memory :)
