In order to improve performance on most emulators I used a 3a power supply, a 1TB external HDD (with external power source), a external usb 2.0 adapter (with external power source), and BerryBoot with the latest Retropie (version 4.3) on a Raspberry Pi 3. Now my PSX emulator, and NDS emulator plays flawlessly. The HDD, and the adapter are the only things directly plugged into the pi. Also I installed BerryBoot's OS information on the HDD not the SD card.
